For the money I spent, I am quite happy with my Magellan RoadMate 1400 GPS navigator. It has a decent-sized display, loud speaker, touchscreen controls, and is powered by a regular USB-mini cord. It navigates well, and receives position updates about 1 second behind real-time, which for a GPS unit, is rather fast. The maps are easy to read, and at night, it even has a night-mode which changes it to "high contrast" colors (black with muted neon highlights). On the downside, the battery life is not as good as I hoped, and the screen can be a bit hard to view in bright sunlight. The particular unit I bought did not come with a power cord or a mounting bracket, so I had to furnish those myself (I had a USB cable and a car USB adapter, and I used velcro to mount it to my dashboard.) The SD card that comes with the unit is only 1GB, so if you want to use the 2009 map update, you will have to buy a 4GB SDHC memory card before you can install it. Overall, I'm rather impressed with my purchase. I got my unit for $50, and even once I include the cost of a USB cable, power adapter, SD card, and the map update, I'm still well below the unit's original $250 price tag.Read full review
After a ton of research I decided to buy the RoadMate because of how easy it is to use. My sister has a 1200 that I had been playing with so I knew that a Magellen would be something that held up well (she's had hers for several years). I also knew that it was one with good reception that I could use anywhere! My dad has a gps that must be held up to the car window before it will calculate your route, the Magellan can be held in my lap and it works fine. After receiving my RoadMate I immediately plugged it in and started playing with it, no user manual required! It's a plug and play user intuitive gps and I love that. The only problems I have had with it are first that it's poi are not as up to date as I would like them. To solve that problem I immediately registered my gps, and sent away for a usb cord so I could update it via the magellan website. I haven't gotten it updated yet (to spend the least $ as possible I ordered the usb from overseas) but I am confident that it will help once I have. The second problem is slightly bigger. I left the unit in my car, in the glove box, and I think it got to cold. When I pulled it out to use it first thing in the morning the other day it did a weird sound and froze up. I reset it and it did it again. So I plugged it into the charger and left it off for several hours. By the time I went to use it again it was find and functioning normally. I am not sure if either the battery drained to far to use (even with it plugged in) or it got to cold but I was very frustrated. From now on I will keep the unit in the house hanging on a hook near my keys and hopefully will never have that issue again. The battery life is not to great but if you are buying the gps to use in your car then that isn't so big of a deal. Just plug in the car charger before use. For the price and ease of use I highly suggest buying Magellan if you're looking for a gps!! The ease of use is the greatest asset to having one of these things ... if my 4 year old can work the thing anybody can!Read full review
This roadmate 1400 we use as a speedometer. Our speedo is fine. But the gps spped is easy to read when mounted on windshield and this way you don't take your eyes off the roadway. The 1400 does not have a color changeable map background for daytime. Pastel dark green. If it were white than it would be 5 stars. Otherwise 4 stars.

i bought it used at a very good price $29. well worth the price. I now have two of these units (first one over one year) and performs great. Power cord becomes intermittent after awhile on mine. Night time imagery is somewhat too dark for me. Nice mounting bracket. the best of all i have seen. snap and go. easy to install and remove. I use it to travel with also ,and it has not failed me yet. I'd recommend it to anyone.
The device is extremely easy to use and it reacognized most points of interests. the directions are clear and the voice commands are clear and accurate. The only problems I have with the roadmate 1400 is the fact that there is no bluetooth speaker phone, and the fact that you have to type out the exact name of what your looking for in the points of interest search and sometimes you might get a letter off or -, _ or ' and it wont find what your talking about. Overall I am very satisfied.
