This RAID controller is a great upgrade from the builtin RAID on most G6/7 servers, and with its capacitor backed flash cache you don't have to worry about batteries like you do on many RAID controllers. For my HP DL380 G6 it handles everything I want it to do nicely, and it works perfectly to connect to my HP StorageWorks MSA60.

UPDATE 7/28/2020: This card pretends to work. When it does, it does a really good job. But eventually, reality comes to get you. The amount of time I wasted on a Debian 10 install that used this card feels insurmountable. The amount of data lost is great. I cannot recommend this card to anyone. I can't even recommend this card to a sadist. It causes networking issues, mouse issues, pretty much any issue you can think of sporadically appears in the host system. Please, if you value your sanity and time, please do not buy this card. Purchase literally any other HBA, preferably one that is either in IT Mode or is JBOD. -- UPDATE 7/26/2020: This card HATES anything to do with an external enclosure. It works great directly connected to drives. Not as fast as another cheap HBA I bought, but decent. Would I recommend buying this to get into SAS? Absolutely not. Would I recommend this to be used in anything truly mission-critical? Absolutely not. Would I recommend this for a development desktop as a cheap interface card? Maybe. It seems to work, but I don't completely trust it. If I wanted something completely reliable, I'd probably just use a host bus adapter instead of this card. The only upside to a card like this is being able to boot from it. Other than that, there's really no difference between this and a host bus adapter in terms of speed. -- This doesn't work like it's supposed to. Enclosure 50? Multiple drives from the same slot? Only finding 5-7 drives in a nearly-full (15 drives) 16-drive enclosure? If you want this experience and so many more, try buying this card. For $16, I got what I paid for: an unusable raw 30TB of capacity in one enclosure and 8TB in another. If you want to do anything with SAS, I cannot recommend this controller to anyone. Don't buy.Read full review

Works fine in any machine. DON'T upgrade the firmware, it breaks the BIOS boot on non-HP machines.

4 external cable ports, and 2 internal, (4 connections per port.) This is an excellent controller as long as you have the space for the card. Also realize, the 6gb/s is for SAS drives only. SATA drives are limited to 3gb/s transfers. All in all, an excellent controller as long as you're aware of its capabilities!

Easy to set up, excellent built quality and support for a number of RAID versions. 1GB of RAM and a battery which makes it a very good RAID card.
