if you are unfamiliar with Squadron-Signal publications, they have been printing a series of books with the “in action” title since the 70’s, covering aircraft, armor, ships as well as combat troops. these book are very popular with model builders because one can read a book in an afternoon which condenses all of the pertinent information about a subject into 50 pages with black & white photos on nearly every page, and makes him into an instant aficionado. i have a large collection of these books myself, and sometimes find mistakes by authors of other books or by model kit designers. these books are indispensable. the Waffen Schutz-Staffel book (meaning “armed protection squad”) book is about the German elite forces who were specially trained and equipped after taking an oath of loyalty, answering to Adolf Hitler's orders. these units were created in the 1930's as Hitler's personal body guard at first, but when the shooting started, they grew to over 800,000 troops in this “Nazi army”. these divisions were invaluable to Hitler, because he was paranoid that the generals under his command would try to assassinate him (with good reason). the Waffen SS were deployed as every type of ground unit, and they were given the most important missions in Hitler’s agenda. this book covers the leaders, evolution, weapons, insignia and vehicles used by these 38 divisions. the centerfold and back covers have renderings by Ron Volstad of troops showing their uniforms and equipment IN COLOR. i recommend this book for anyone doing research on the German armed forces in World War II whether for an essay, a model of a single figure or armor diorama, or even if they're just interested in collecting scale action figures.Read full review
A Classic from Squadron, one of my first books about the Waffen SS and their unique Uniforms.I got my first copy in the 70's The multitude of images illistrate how Die Hard these anti communist troops fought to stave off an imanent soviet invasion.

This actually dates back to 1974 and is one of the first non-vehicle photobooks Squadron/Signal ever did. All it is, is photographs of Waffen-SS soldiers in action from 1939 to 1945 with a color insert of how certain Waffen-SS uniforms look like in color. Very basic, and outstripped by the number of large historical books about the criminal organization that was the SS. This book forms a trilogy with S/S's "Panzergrandier", "Luftwaffe Paratooper", and "Wehrmact Soldiers" photobooks; I mostly got this one for completeness's sake.
This book is chock full of rarely seen b/w photos, color uniform camo illustrations & Division markings. A MUST-have reference source for German armor modelers!
