I am a Nikon man and have been for many years, having possessed over 20 Nikons. I cannot abide point ant shoots due to their tiny sensors and inferior performance, but occasionally we need to have a lightweight camera if hiking or travelling light. We tried the Nikon D40. Two of us liked it but I did not as I felt it was too heavy and bulky. (I used to like the Nikon Pronea S with its tiny lenses for this reason) I read the spec. of the E410 and it's lenses and was intrigued by it's light weight and small size. I have always liked Olympus as a good second to Nikon so we bought it. The performance is outstanding! The four thirds system performance is almost indistinguishable from APS-C. It's high ISO performance matches that of the D40 and the results in good light at ISO 400 surpass that of the D40. The two digital lenses are tiny and have amazing resolution for their size. I find that I usually have the 40-150mm mounted and love the ability to have the equivalent to a 300mm lens. This combination weighs 630gms compared with my D90 with its 55-200mm at 1120gms. The only weakness with this camera is it's flash performance in comparison to Nikon Otherwise highly recommended! 2015. We upgraded to the E420 which is the same with a much better screen. We still love this camera!Read full review
I've wanted an SLR digital for years, but price kept me away. I'm not a professional photographer, but I often have to shoot pictures for work and documentation and I just love shooting. This camera made everything I shot way better right out of the box. I'd been using a Kodak with manual controls and a fixed lens, which was good preparation for this in trying to push it as hard as I could to get decent pictures. I love looking through the lens to shoot, I love the speed of the auto focus (when you pre-focus, it's shooting speed is amazingly fast. Shooting at very fast filmspeeds (dark, indoor) produces quite a bit of noise, but twilight images are wonderful. The two lenses are perfect for my needs. Worst thing about the camera is the lens caps--they pop off too easily. The 10mp aspect makes everything so rich and detailed. Color is intense and saturated. Best thing is its small body. I can shoot one-handed with my left hand which I do when driving (I know, I shouldn't, but I get my best pictures that way.) I don't use the live lcd screen except for shooting text. It just slows things down. It might be useful for studio portraits or still life shots, but is kind of redundant on an SLR. The controls took me a couple of days to get comfortable with, but are very natural for me now. In a quickly developing situation, you can always shoot auto. My friends are raving about my pictures, which has never been the case before. I think this is a great camera for someone who wants to get more serious about photography but has a small budget. The perfect art school camera.Read full review
An entry-level DSLR camera geared toward amateur photographers looking for a dramatic step-up in quality with a not-quite dramatic bounce in price, the Olympus EVOLT E-410 DSLR camera is an outstanding choice for photography enthusiasts graduating from either a basic point-and-shoot or a more features-oriented compact digital camera. This review will target those who are looking to dip their toes in the world of DSLR photography, a realm offering the highest quality images and the highest versatility. I have been taking photos for over a decade. Make no mistake--the E-410 is one of the most robust cameras I've come across for its price. Photographers who approach the art with this as their first camera will be unable to take advantage of every tool offered on this model. While it is certainly possible to put a lens on the camera, point at something interesting, and press the shutter button, much more if possible on this camera than with the cell phone cameras and mass market pocket digital cameras that are now nearly ubiquitous. Coming from a generic point-and-shoot camera, regardless of its quality, the E-410 is a massive leap forward in photo quality and versatility. Users will be able to tweak any manner of functions and settings on the camera to suit his or her liking. The LCD screen in the back of the camera offers a live-view function, meaning that photographers who dislike looking through the eyepiece can still use the LCD screen to take photos. The flash on this model is respectable, but the option exists to use your own external flash. The lenses are interchangeable--something unthinkable on cell phone or smaller cameras--meaning that one can simply change a lens to suit the current photo needs. The lenses themselves all you to attach screw-on light filters for additional alterations--I purchased an infrared light filter and use it to take photos that fall outside of the visible light spectrum! And in general, you can expect image quality will be much better than any compact pocket camera you've ever used. Although this product is nearly five years old, photos taken today still look great. At a cost that's hard to beat, budding photographers need not stand at the edge of the DSLR pool with one toe outstretched to test the waters--jump in with the E-410, a highly recommended model for those curious about just how deep photography can really go.Read full review
This is an excellent camera for a person who is starting out in the professional world of digital SLR photography. There are far more settings to it beyond the instruction manual, once you get into the professional side to it, and the images it takes are immaculate. One downside to it, though, is that when you use the LCD screen, it tends to be a little slow on it's reaction time, but once the LCD screen is shut off, the reaction time becomes much faster. Another positive is that the battery pack lasts a very long time, especially with the LCD screen shut off. I still bought a couple of spares anyway, in case one ran out on me in the field. Overall, It is a great camera.
