A long awaited replacement for the Diablo games, and about time it is too! Well worth $20....wouldn't pay any more for it. If you are familiar with the Diablo games, you'll be quite comfortable with this game. Not a steep learning curve required to start playing. But....here come the "but's": I play as single player, and only have dial up connection. Don't even try to play the game until you've downloaded the patch - I did - with major frustration. Only to get to the final level, kill all five mega monsters, and then find out the game didn't give me credit for killing them. And it took me hours to get 'em all! (What with all the bugs and all.) So why didn't I download the patch sooner? Well, I'm on dial up remember? And the "patch" is 185.94 MB. Yeah, MegaBytes. Took me 3 days, and I had to use a downloader program to get it, as I kept getting "timed out" and kicked off the download server. That's a biggie on my complaint list. But the patch seems to work nicely, no problems since installing it, haven't run into the former bugs that were so prevalent before. So absolutely positively, get the game, install it, then get the patch. It'll save you tons of headache and heart ache. Next complaint - no real advice on tweaking the tons of settings you can tweak - and in my case, had to tweak, to get the game to play properly in the first place. The default settings just didn't work well with my not-top-of-the-line graphics card, and I didn't have any success in finding out what I could do, short of getting a new card. When I first attempted to play, the graphics were so choppy that it was impossible to play....and searching for solutions was leading me to buying a different graphics card, and downloading and installing tons of huge files....all on dial up. Fortunately, I did finally tweak in to settings that work well with my system. Mostly by intuition. Turns out my graphics card works wonderfully for this game - once I'd lowered all the settings to fit my system. Third complaint - no good walk thrus are available yet, at least not without "buying" someone else's guide! There are some partial ones out there, and they helped me in a couple of tight spots, where advancing seemed impossible, and I was wondering if I had hit some fatal bug! But so far, the guides I've found online aren't complete - they don't carry you completely thru the game. Next complaint - upgrading your weapons and armor. I've lost track of the number of times I've upgraded stuff, only to find out I upgraded my way right out of it - couldn't even use the stuff until my next "promotion". Or two. So use caution when upgrading, adding attributes, etc. And then there's a complaint I had with all the Diablo games, and that seems to have been kept in this game. At higher levels, some of the monsters are way too easy to kill, and others are way too hard. Seems like there should be a better way to curve the effort required, so that the challenges rise smoothly, rather than "one blow kills this one, 50 kills that one". Playing on Vista home premium edition, with service pack 1. AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual core processor 3600+ 1.90 GHz. 32 bit operating system. NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE (which is less than what is recommended for this game, but after tweaking settings, is getting me along just fine.) Despite my complaints, I love the game! Well worth $20 bucks or so - IF you get the patch!Read full review
"Hellgate London" is a very good actionRPG and even though it is a bit old it is definitely worth checking out even today (2010) , provided that you are more interested in the single player campaign that the multiplayer. Graphics are good , but unfortunately tend to be repetitive since there are practically 3 main environments in the game: The city streets , the sewers and the subway. After a while it gets boring to see the same charred ruins , run through the same dark corridors and explore tunnels that all look alike. On the good side , there are three main classes of characters to play as , each one with two variations to choose from , and unlike other actionRPGs , in "Hellgate London" every character class offers a completely different gaming experience. Some of them fight with swords , others cast spells or use guns so , according to the character you play as , the game can be either a 3D "Diablo"-clone or a FPS. There is also a nice variety of enemies to fight and tons of weapons and items to equip yourself with. Even the levels change (but not that much!) each time you begin a new game. The single player campaign is quite long and interesting but , on the bad side , the game is really easy for experienced players , even on the highest difficulty settings. Your weapons never run out of ammo or break down , your armor can absorb any number of hits without being damaged and you'll soon become so strong that you'll be able to wipe out entire armies of demons with no sweat at all. Even the toughest enemies you 'll encounter...aren't really so tough! But on the whole I had a lot of fun with "Hellgate London" and I even played though the game twice. There is also multiplayer but I guess that everybody's too busy playing "Call of Duty:Modern Warfare 2" and "Left for Dead 2" so I doubt you'll find anyone interested in playing a 3-year old game. Overall , a good game that offers great value for money.Read full review
Many people have panned this game as badly written & excessively buggy - whilst the game on release was buggy, subsequent patches have increased reliability and smoothed gameplay so its at a more than acceptable level. The game itself is unbelievable fun and almost addictive -there is new content - such as the Stonehenge Chronicles, with another new major area due out soon. I love this game, its great fun, but for me the community is what makes it so special. Character progression is easy to get to grips with, and the game itself is fun, especially if you love finding new items. With other modes such as hardcore and Elite, which are harder to master but more rewarding in terms of loot and experience there is a lot of re playability, not to mention the 6 different classes - which may increase with other updates. The only reason i haven't given this game a maximum "Excellent" score is that the single player game is lagging very much behind the multi player (I suggest if its possible - if you want single player just play online on your own), and the European support isn't good. I myself play on the US servers. Give it a go, you may well find yourself immersed in the "just one more level"/"I just need to find a "special loot here"" experienceRead full review
Hellgate London is actually a pretty enjoyable title. It has a fun battle system, which takes away a good portion of drudgery from the diablo series' point and click system. It has a storyline that is, in theory, neat, but the game doesn't quite convey it very well. It has a really awesome system for modifying items and does a good job bringing an RPG-type gameplay into a modern environment. The major problem, though, is what fun you have with all of those things is dampened by the fact that everywhere you go looks exactly like the place you started the game off in. In fact, the one time the game gives you a neat new environment, it almost immediately reuses it until it is just as boring as all the others. All that said, I have played the game quite a bit. The character system is very well-done, and the game is worth checking out.Read full review
First i want to mention I have not been all the way through this game. These are the views i have so far, but 1st heres a little developer history.. Hellgate London is a new game from a new developer called Flagship studios. Flagship are a few key people who had alot to do with the creation of the Diablo RPG series who decided to leave blizzard & start a new developer. So with that said you may gather a little bit of what to expect from Hellgate. UPDATE(Edit) Flagship studios has officialy closed!! The online severs have since been taken down, single player is the only option now. THE GOOD The game has 6 character Classes to choose from theres anything from dual wielding blade masters & gun using sharp shooters to summoners & spell casters. The gameplay here is the key, this is real time 3rd or 1st person rpg. Note only characters who use guns can be played in the 1st person view. The game is a long & unexpected blast to me so far(i use the sharp shooter character) The areas you fight in are good sized & have plenty to kill. Like in the diablo series monsters randomly drop items, like weapons, armors, helms, belts & much more. The items can be worn if they are for you character class & you have the required stats to equip them. You can sell them for $ or dismantle the items into basic supplies that you can build other items with. This makes everything useful to some degree. There are four basic class of items in the game including normal, enhanced, legendary & unique. Each having more and/or better stats than the class below it. This is a busy game unlike standard mmo style rpgs & can be played on or off line. There is a single player game for off line so you dont have to have a broadband connection to play. The combat areas are mostly all randomly generated so its not always the same layout. The monster selection in most areas are randomly generated so you never know what to expect when you enter a level. It could be undead zombies, bats , various demons & or beasts. Maybe flying at you or running & can be melee or rage attacking or any combination of. The monster A.I. ranges from little=running straight at you to fairly advanced=running all the way to the side or sides of the area to flank you. As an RPg the combat is ground breaking & as a FPS the game offers more customizing options than any shooter around. The game has had many patches since the game came out & runs smoothly most of the time. There have been rebalances of character skill powers & a new area added. THE BAD UPDATED ------- "As it stands" The servers for this game will be shut down permanently on 1/31/09. Thus that will be the end of the online & multi player style play. My numerical ratings so far, 1-10 higher is better. Game play 8 its an RPG over all so there leveling involved. Graphics 8 this is no quake4 engine game but with the graphic settings maxed it looks nice. Sound 8 good sound.. I cant leave out how much customizing you can do to weapons in this game. UPDATE It is confirmed that the online servers will be shut down permanently on 1/31/09 so after then its single player only. Once again I will mention you can play single player after the servers shut down, just be sure to get all the updates for the single player game at the hellgate site..Read full review
