Trine is a side-scroller which was developed by Frozenbyte, an "Indie" company from Finland. Trine is labeled as a "fantasy side scroller" that has RPG elements thrown in to the mix. Story In Trine, you get to play as three characters. Together, they end up in an old academy where a mystical object, the Trine, connects their souls. The threesome has no other option than to work together in order to nullify the effect of the object. Easier said than done though, because the land they're in is a kingdom where evil rules. And this evil must be vanquished at all cost. The lady from the threesome is Zoya the thief. She's extremely agile and has a grappling hook to reach nearly impossible places. With her bow, she can take out enemies from afar. The second character is Amadeus the magician. Instead of studying real hard to get the hang of the fireball spell that all magicians ought to know, Amadeaus spend too much time trying to impress the ladies. Though Amadeaus has not completely failed as a magician, because he can use his powers to summon and create items like boxes and planks, and move them with the pure will of his mind. Last but not least, there is Pontius. Pontius is the kind of guy who bashes first and asks later. He's strong, but slow and is the only character that can actually defend himself from incoming projectiles and attacks. Music The music is good. It changes from level to level, but is bland that won't be memorable. When your hovering over the game on your PS3 list, that's the only music that sticks with me. Controls/Flaws This is the worst flaw in the game. It seems as this game was rushed out development, because the flaws in this game is the biggest ans main issue. The grappling hook the thief has will go THREW solid objects, as will the arrows. Also, the hook will grab where ever it wants to depending on where you throw it, it seems as it hooks to the closest piece of wood not where you want it to go. Trying to make jumps in this game is a joke. You'll have a 50/50 chance of either staying where you just jumped over to or falling and in places like the last level where perfect jumping is a must or you die, the poorly written jumping coding doesn't help. Then, there are glitches. Oh... the glitches. I was next to a chest in Level 9 I think it was and went over to the left past it (it was in a small alcove) and my character flew THREW screens and landed somewhere in the middle of the level and then my characters kept going backwards and I couldn't control them. Also, on the last level, I was controlling the Knight and fell into the lava and had that glitch on me too, I saw THREW the lava. Did I mention there's no Bosses or even final boss in this game? Ya, that's right. The last level is just rushing up a tower beating the lava as it follows and then you jump up to a platform. To sum up the entire review: Trine is a side-scrolling platformer with lackluster action, a gimmicky experience system and a bunch of mechanics that are not fully explored or taken advantage of. Variety is scarce in the twenty-or-so levels. Puzzles are non-existent and combat becomes heinously boring. The story is standard. The graphics are what you'd expect from a game made in 2009 by more than five people. The voice acting is admirable. The controls are down right horrible and there are glitches on almost every level. This game will you make yell and scream or even laugh at how you die in this game or when you get caught in a glitch.Read full review
What a beautiful game this is! “Trine” is a real joy to play and it reminded me of classic platform games of the past like “Pandemonium” and “The Lost Vikings”. The 3D graphics are spectacular, the level design is brilliant and the enviromental puzzles are complicated and challenging enough to force you to use your brain, without becoming overly difficult or frustrating. Actually, I think that the whole game is somewhat easy, even on the highest difficulty setting, making it accessible by all kinds of gamers, including casual ones. I also give the game extra credit for not employing any awful DRM or copy protection system. You just install it to your hard-drive and you can play without the disc in the DVD drive.
I will have to be honest about this game, it is one of the best games I have seen in a long time. It combines a few different elements of gameplay to make one very excellent experience. It is a first person shooter that lets you switch between 3 characters in order to solve different obstacles or puzzles, but where this really stands out is the graphics ! a lot of eye candy here. You will find yourself in awe of the absolutely beautiful surroundings, the use of color here reminds me of the movie Avatar ! lots of luminous eye candy to capture your attention. The dialog between characters and the storyline just add to the experience, this game does not disappoint !!!
Trine is meant for only a certain type of gamer. Those who are into puzzle games like the Mist series, but that series was GOOD, not compared to this piece of trash they call a game. Let me count the number of glitches I saw and/or were caught in during gameplay: 1. When dying either me or the skeleton enemies the bodies sometimes went threw areas of the terrain 2. There was a part in Level 9 or so where I went for a chest and went too far to the left and the game glitched then my characters only went to the left without any help from me. 3.The grappling hook needs to be gutted and redone! The controls aren't there at all. The controls overall rely too much on real time physics and don't allow type of leniency of non complicated human controls. 4.The grappling hook goes THREW solid objects like pieces of wood or stone. Likewise, the the Magician's magic when made into a bridge will glitch. To put this simply; this game blows. The story line is non existent, the levels are far too linear and the controls blow hardcore. Trine tries too hard to use the Physics and Logic engines, it tries too hard to be like the better side strollers and plat formers. This is the one of WORST game ever made. The game was rushed out of R&D far too early. I won't be recommending this to anyone, unless you like crappy games, wasting money and enjoy dying over and over again replaying the same levels over and over again then is might be for you v=but other wise if you got a PS3 I would get Little Big Planet!Read full review
I have replayed this game more than any other game I own. As a former beta-tester with more than one thousand computer games played, I have to say...this one is better than any other platform game!! The physics involved are phenomenal and the ability to play as three different characters all during the game is unique and intriguing. You play as either a fighter, thief or wizard. Each character has it's unique abilities..the thief has a grappling hook that allows her to swing over obstacles and a bow and arrow for long distance defense, the wizard can draw boxes and planks to get over obstacles and get up to high places (dropping a box on an enemy is an effective defense:) and the fighter can protect you when you are in deep trouble. You can change from character to character by touching the number keys..1, 2, or 3. You can also change the difficulty levels as you are playing if you really get stuck...but don't...you can get through it. I have played the game more than ten times since I bought it. Usually, I am not a big platform game player, preferring first person medieval fighters or hack and slashers at this stage of my life, but Trine is wonderful and I highly recommend it. The best description of the game is a combination of hack and slash and the Incredible Machine with accurate physics reactions. This game is a winner!!! Now for the not so good.... The game has a few bugs in it...nothing major but a couple that are a bit annoying. I have played the game through several times without having a problem and then other times the game's little bugs shined through. The only other complaint I had was the shortness of the game. Now I play a lot of these games so maybe that isn't a fair complaint. For someone who is not an experienced player, this will be a very challenging game but for those of you who are experienced...you may be disappointed with the shortness of the game. I have spoken to the company and there is a possibility of a sequel or an add-on. I am very hopeful that they will actually come up with another edition of Trine or even add a way for folks to make their own levels for the game. In the meantime, you cannot go wrong spending your money on this one!! One other note, this game is wonderful for adults but it is also a great game for kids as well. The easy level is easy enough for a preteen and there is no bloody gore to deal with. The humor is on two levels so both adults and children will enjoy it. The only warning I would have for children is the game gets a bit scary in places...dark dungeons, underwater and some web spitting spiders to contend with, so if they are prone to nightmares...maybe not. But for adults who like some puzzling with their fighting...this game is highly recommended.Read full review
