Game play is fun. Reminds me of the old days of Wing Commander: Privateer. The are a few downsides. Could have been a larger variety in ship designs and weapon designs as well as landing locations. Does it always have to be a 'trade station?' Game is also extremely buggy. Was produced specifically for Windows 2000 w/ service pack 4 or Windows XP w/ Service pack 2. Game consistanly crashes. Have to go through a lot to make it stable. Another down side is it does not work well with Windows Vista. Should you want Vista, look into dual booting with XP. It is possible to make it run in Vista but a lot of work to do so and again, very buggy. Good luck with this one. Hope someone can fix the bugs!
Still waiting for the next great space sim to come along... and let's face it, it's been a long time. I've always been a fan of games like X-Wing/TIE Fighter/X-Wing Alliance, Wing Commander, Descent Freespace, and others in that genre. When I saw the announcement and later the trailers for the game, I was very hopeful that the dry spell was finally over. While Dark Star One definitely has it's strengths, it still falls short of being great. Pros: Combat is solid and fun... this part really carries the game IMO, as it was able to capture the better features of the LucasArts Star Wars sims. General interface is well laid out and reasonably intuitive. Graphically, while not perfect, is overall well done. Cons: Way too repetitious. This much becomes apparent very early off in the game. What I mean by this is that the various star systems and bases all look more or less the same. Voice acting is worthy of a spot on Mystery Science Theater 3000. Mouse is not configurable. Heavy hardware requirements to get decent performance. Overall, just a general lack of depth to the game. Summary: I almost think that perhaps the designers spent their time developing a good combat sim, then threw the rest together as an afterthought. On the surface it is a nice looking game, but unfortunately lacks the depth necessary to keep it interesting. For that reason I rated it average. I've been hearing rumors of a possible sequel to Dark Star One... I can only hope that next time they will take the time to "flesh out" the universe a bit more, perhaps work on a better trade model, and generally add some polish where needed. Then perhaps it would be worthy of being called the "next great space sim".Read full review
This is a good space sim with a decent story line. I have not finished it yet, but from what I see so far, I am hooked.
