I bought this game as a fan of the first STALKER game and a long time FPS gamer. The first thing I noticed was the frequent stutter even though my system exceeds the game play requirements. The game also has several other "bugs" like characters walking up behind you and blocking stairways/doors while running back and forth, the clocktime when sleeping is way off and other faulty A.I.issues are evident. Gamespot reviews the game as the most stable STALKER game out, but I found the original game easily more stable overall, and I read the blogs about the stutter issues while searching for a patch/solution. No patches yet exist, but a lot of people were talking about the stutter/bugs issues and no solutions that work. I see the efforts to improve the graphics and atmospheric effects, and they are slightly better, but the game needs some patching. Although some reviews mention the freeplay roaming in the game, there are barriers throught the game map and I found that the game quests must be played out in a certain sequence often or they are "dropped", and sometimes characters you need to meet will not show up. Overall I was disappointed in this STALKER game mostly because it took to much work to get to actually enjoying the game.If you are a diehard STALKER fan with more tolerance than myself you will enjoy the game more however, and hopefully a patch will be forthcoming for this game's issues. I had high expectations for STALKER. I'd read the reviews of a dark, brooding FPS/RPG set in a nuclear-ridden Russia featuring an interesting storyline and various factions to deal with. However, STALKER doesn't live up to the hype, especially when compared with other great FPS/RPGs like Oblivion and Fallout 3. To say the graphics are aging is an understatement. Even with all the video options set to high (on an Intel i7 940, Gigabyte EX58-UD3R, 3GB OCZ DDR3, 1T Seagate Barracuda HD, 2-Radeon 4850s in crossfire) the game seems circa 2003 at best. Landscapes are blocky, polygons are clearly visible and NPCs sort of glide-step across the terrain (ala Morrowind, which is much older). The conversation system is backwards, i.e. dialog with NPCs is text-based, but when they're talking among themselves it's all in Russian, or something that sounds like Russian. So any information that could be gleamed by eavesdropping is useless. Sure, they will occasionally speak in English when you approach an NPC, but then it's only mundane stuff like, "Hey, bro" (wouldn't a Russian say "comrade"?) or "Put your weapon away." Something else that I should've liked was the damage system of the weapons, yet I found it more frustrating than satisfying. It only takes 2 or 3 shots from an enemy to kill your character, yet it takes many shots from a high-powered weapon to kill a mutant dog. Unless the dog had mutated an armored body, one or two shots from a rifle would drop it. The rifles also had unrealistic recoil, even after I supposedly added an 'anti-recoil' accessory, that made the guns impossible to aim after the first couple shots. Also, the grenades had a weird hook to their trajectory that made an accurate throw difficult. I really tried to get into the story, but was so bored by the limpid side quests, poor graphics, weapons glitches and ancient dialog system that I lost interest. This one's going right back on eBay.Read full review
This game is good, but there is no real sense of direction. You are given a directive, but not really told where you are supposed to go, so you wind up wandering around. Also, the game has very little in the way of a tutorial and gives no hints about gameplay. For example, you can put your gun away, and you should when near other soldiers, or they will shoot you on sight. The game does not tell you this, or even hint at it. Once you get over that and learn (usually by trial and error) the subtleties of the game, there is great fun to be had exploring the world and learning it's secrets.
This one is by far the best of the series. The gameplay is fun as always. The PDA is easier to use this time around and the inventory screen is easy as well. The inventory menu showing what protection you have is easier and better organized. The A.I. is tweaked a little better but people who you are talking still walk away from you. I also liked the new sleep feature and being able to store items in my own personel storage box is great. Weapons still have a great realism to them in the fact that certain ammo has great stopping power. This game does not have any gliches like the previous titles which makes it very fun to play. i would recommend this to people who like FPS's with some thinking involved.
