I've seen reviews of the KOEI line of games that gripe constantly about how nothing ever changes--it's the same game with new characters and settings. What people seem to forget is that the reason very little changes is that the game works well as it is. Sure, if you've played every one of the Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warrior games that have come out, they're going to seem repetitive. However, this was the first "Empires" game I've tried, and I thought it was great. If you remember the game Nobunaga's Ambition, this is a lot like that in many ways. You start out controlling one fief in ancient Japan, and your goal is to unify the country under one flag. Each season is a turn. To begin with, you have one action you can take, to increase your troops, cater to your people, care for your lands, or negotiate with other fiefs. As you conquer more lands, that increases to a final total of five actions per season. Unlike Nobunaga's Ambition, where your success in invading a territory was determined by the computer based on your troops, morale, training, etc., in Samurai Warriors II, Empires, you get to play out each battle, choosing one of your officers to play. You can apply various tactics and formations which will increase your chance of success, and once the battle starts, you can give each officer specific orders: Attack Base, Defend Base, Attack Officer, Defend Officer, and Auto. You specify which base or officer is to be attacked or defended, and once their mission is finished, they flip back to auto and decide what they should do. Fortunately, they tend to make decent decisions--this isn't a game where you have to go rescue your officers because they have suicidal AI driving them. Completing the game once unlocks options you can choose for further play--the number of officers you can use, whether or not you have a set number of years to complete your goal, the ability to execute officers of have them die of old age, and whether or not officer advancement from previous games should be applied. All in all, I've found the game entertaining enough to be worth buying. There are different scenarios you can play through, and in each one, you can select the force of your choice, which gives the game a fair amount of re-playability. There is also a create-an-officer option, and a scenario where you can select any fief you want and put the officer of your choice in as its lord. The computer then populates the rest of Japan randomly. So, go forth and conquer!Read full review
To fully enjoy this game one would need to already be an avid fan of the hack and slash game genre. I've been a fan of the Dynasty Warriors franchise for as long as I can remember and is the main reason I got this game. I'm not a very good reviewer in that I cannot discern the good points of this game to the bad ones. I guess that can be considered a good thing seeing as how the game in my mind is perfect. Though I must admit it doesn't have a very wide range of character customization in the new officer menu. Then again this is a PS2 game so I can cut it some slack over that. Besides, the whole customization of your family crest, family name, musou title, and what not is a nice touch. Overall, this is a fantastic game that I recommend to anyone who still has a PS2 or a backwards compatible PS3. Have fun gaming! :DRead full review
This is an excellent continuation of the original Samurai Warriors. this is a great game for someone who likes a game with a strategic streak. Great new outfits and characters, this newer game lets you use more characters in various ways. you are allowed to control your group of spearmen, swordsman, or musketers. very fun and would recommend this game and the other samurai warrior games as well. :)
I bought it because I am a fan of the dynasty warriors and thought I should try this out. The create a character is lame, but still kind of fun. The game takes some getting used to, but once you do it gets you hooked. All in all, it is a fun game to pass time with.
good game. Its worth buying or atleast playing. Over 400 character and there all playable, It takes a while to figure out but its worth it. I accually rated it 5-5
