I thought I would like this game, so I bought it. The controls are awful and at first it is impossible to play well. The game starts out right away with your character surrounded by enemies and doesn't give you time to learn controls. Once you make it through the opening scene though the game slows down and you can learn how to play the game. I really dislike how the D-Pad is set up and if you can get past the awful controls everything else is pretty good. The story line and graphics are great. If you have the patience to learn the controls you will really like this game.
This was originally a playstation game, so its clearly a port with some additions. Like being able to randomize the items through out the game for greater replay value. Only thing missing in this version is HARD mode. Its a pitty if youre an hardcore gamer. The good stuff is that you dont have to switch CD/GDROM like you had to do on playstation or dreamcast. Note that there are also a gamecube, and a PC port, which I choose to not include for inferiour reasons. The other good stuff is that they have fitted this game into 1 512mb cartrige. (64mb compressed rom size) The sound and intro movies quality is affected by this, but thats it. Everything else is perfect. Playing this on an RGB modded N64 console, with expansion pack makes this port looking superb. I say if, you can live without the hardmode its the N64 version, which is a playstation port, that has been refined. If you want Hard mode, among high quality movies. Play the dreamcast version using the VGA box. I think the dreamcast version is better then the PC version, although its based on it. N64 version is cool to collect, since its the only resident evil ( non-held ) that is cartrige made. This was also meant to be a game that should build up the popularity for Resident evil 0, that was first announst for N64. It later got remade for the gamecube instead.Read full review
Resident Evil 2 itself gets 5 stars. The N64 version is just a tad more difficult in terms of the controller. Using the analog stick on the N64 controller to control Leon or Claire can prove to be a bit difficult at times. Still love RE2 on every console, and I think any hardcore fan will take this N64 version for what it is and still find ways to appreciate it through minor control issues, because besides that you still get the awesome story, very smooth graphics, and tons of replay value. Can't go wrong buying this version, although the N64 port wouldn't be my first choice. I know many like me are anxiously anticipating a remake done on RE2 as they masterfully did on the gamecube version.
Fun gameplay. I always enjoy a good shoot 'em up game. Only two dislikes: 1)The controls/movement of characters is a little sloppy, but you do get used to it so it's not that bad, and 2)The saves. That's the first game I've encountered where you couldn't save when/where ever you wanted. But the creator's were good about teh number of ink cartridges in the game. I never ran out them. Overall a very fun game, and worth playing if you like puzzles, zombies and creatures, and shooting things.
Still a Great game twenty years after release. Very happy with this purchase. Never played it when it first came out but got hooked on RE when RE1 got remastered for xbla a few years ago.
