Morgion- Cloaked By Ages, Crowned In Earth: This is the third and final album recorded by Morgion. They had disbanded in the period between 1999's Solinari until work began on Cloaked By Ages in 2003. In 2008 relapse re-released Mogion's first two albums together. It doesn't make sense not to include Cloaked By Ages along with those first two albums, I guess having not released the album in the first place meant relapse couldn't get the rights to re-release it. The quality of the material is at the same high standard of the bands past works and put simply a fan of the bands first two albums would definitely be fans this release. The vocalist may have changed although both qutitarists and the drummer are still on board. This is the type of music to put on and float away to with tracks like the monumental Ebb Tide (parts I & II) you can really sense the majestic natural backdrops that inspired the music conveyed through the instrumental section of this track. This is not the polluting soul-crushing style of doom that taints your lungs in a suffocating murk but a more relaxing reflective sound that draws you in and allows you to breathe the fresh air. Comparisons to bands like Opeth and Anathema can't be avoided, but forget the over inflated rock star associations attached to those bands that lead them on misguided paths away from their original sound. Morgion combine all the fundamental elements that make said bands early work so compelling and add their own individual honesty to it all. Of course Morgion were in their formative years of evolution at the time the mighty UK Doom trio were taking off, and had their first album recorded before anyone ever talked about Opeth.Read full review
