I grew up listening to operas by Gilbert & Sullivan on vinyl records. They were fun to listen to and fun to share. But I had never had the chance to see a performance of any of their operas. I heard there was a series of G&S performances on the BBC but they were not broadcast in our area of the USA. I bought this copy (and am so glad I did! Imangination is a woderful thing, but what I could come up with was not nearly as good as what was recorded. I am sad that these little operettas do not get more time on a live stage. I recommend these to anyone looking for a lighthearted way of looking at the status-quo. The only thing I did not like about this performance as recorded was the lack of bright colors in the costumes and set. Everything was in shades of blue, tan, and white with little touches of gold. It did have the advantage of showing off the performers faces well. I admit I was expecting something a little more showy but it fits the sensibility of the era quite well.Read full review
I love Gilbert & Sullivan operettas and am always looking to see how various groups perform them. This group did sn outstanding job presenting H.M.S. Pinafore. Well done, well presented.
I bought this DVD for my mother, she enjoyed it very much. The only thing she would have liked done differently, would be subtitles.
