The modern world of espresso has brought all kinds of variables into our control. This machine gives you control over every variable you want, and more. Everything from brew temp, brew volume, pre-infusion variables are yours for the taking. Try your lighter roasts at higher temps, lower temps for the darker roasts. You might just find a combo you love from a bean you thought you did not. It will display shot times (pay attention, they go away quickly) as well as turn itself on in the morning for you if you want. Breville's experience in consumer appliances pays off on this machine, it's super friendly. A 'real' espresso aficionado might find the directions patronizing, but real people will appreciate the simple breakdown of the machine's workings. Consistent shots, back to back, just as you set them to be pulled. Dry pucks at the end, and creamy espresso goodness in your cup. Milk steaming is straight forward and easy with the steam wand. Granted, it takes longer than a commercial machine, but the end result is just as satisfying. The steam wand could benefit from being 1/2" longer, but it is manageable. This machine comes with 4 filter baskets, a steam pitcher, head cleaning supplies, everything you need to get started and go. A MUST-HAVE add on (in my opinion) is a better tamp. The machine stores the included tamp as you see it in the photo. Don't use it there in the machine, please. Get a old style mechanical bathroom scale and measure your tamping pressure to reduce another variable. They sell a bottomless portafilter which gives a little more room for taller cups, maybe not a must have but worth it to get. Negatives- It's loud while pulling a shot. It's almost heavy enough to remove a portafilter with one hand, but it's best to use two. You are instructed NOT to descale it yourself. Send it back to Breville. It'll be 4 years before you have to do that, but most machines are user descale-able. It doesn't look like a piece of industrial Italian art. Still, for the price you are getting a feature rich machine that pulls good shots and is easy to maintain. It even tells you when to clean the head. You can hit a button after you set it up and come back a few minutes later and it's done.Read full review
After much research I decided to buy the Breville BES900XL it was a little more money than the Italian machines I was looking at, but after using it for the last few days I am convinced I made the right decision. It makes the best tasting espresso I have ever had anywhere. The learning curve was two pucks in the garbage because I was grinding the beans too fine, the third was just a little too fine, dialed it back one notch and hit the 9 bar mark. After more than 20 shots for myself and another 15 or so for family and friends it has produced a perfect shot every time. It's easy to clean and prepare for another shot or making a latte or cappuccino. The dual boiler makes it super easy to froth the milk and produce copious amounts of micro foam. I am no expert, this is only my second try at making espresso. I had a stove top espresso maker back in the 1980's, but I know now that was not real espresso. I have not played with the PID so I still have many options to try out and see if I can make an even better shot of espresso.Read full review
Having purchased my first cappucino machine some 30-odd years ago in Sardegna, I have some SERIOUS time with various Electra,La Pavoni and other machines...believe me, I like the pure pump machines! This machine, for a serious "at-homer" coffee perfectionist, is a Grand Slam!!! The steamer is killer! The water capacity is grand, the sliding spill-tray easy to clean, the filler takes the best you can pour without slop, great design... the only change I made was a clear green color over the steam indicator...needed subtlety. Great machine! WmRD
I would give it 5 stars, but after you make a shot with the dual or signal wall cups. It's hard to get the coffee grinds out without burning your figures. Other than that, this machine is amazing.

Great machine through and through... The dual boiler is a great feature for making lattes and it helps with temperature control. I often have to make 5 coffees in a row and it takes no time to make them... Good investment in my opinion.
