I bought this for my Western Civ. II studies. It gives a really good background on most of the information, but it's kinda dry and doesn't cover EVERYTHING, and so I recommend getting other materials to help. The practice tests were my favorite part - they are a little bit easier than the actual CLEP, but not TOO much. (Definitely take the practice test in the CLEP OFFICIAL STUDY GUIDE before taking the test.) The actual text helped me get a basic grip on the subject. Using this book, online flash cards, Story of the World, random websites, the COSG, and God, with very little background in this subject, I passed after 4 weeks of studying with a 55/80. So I like this book a lot, and recommend it, but do have more than just this book if you want to pass.
The material covered in the thirteen chapters is fairly comprehensive, but one really must study also the detailed explanations of answers to the two practice tests in order to gain a more complete understanding of what knowledge is expected on the exam itself. However, if this volume is studied thoroughly enough to truly know the answers to the practice questions, one should end up with a fairly good understanding of the relationships between the authors, scientists, philosophies, movements, revolutions, cultures, politics, and consequences of the period. One cannot, of course, merely read through once or twice and believe themselves to be fully prepared for the exam. There is at least one error in the answer key: In Practice Test 1, the answer to question number 18 is shown as (D), but the detailed explanation to that question, although it is also labeled (D), actually refers to answer (E). Nevertheless, for the purpose intended, this is an excellent reference material.Read full review
I bought the CLEP Western Civilization II guide for my daughter. The guidebook provides some very helpful information, like which percentages of questions are derived from which era. Yet the example questions themselves are deceptive. At first, we assumed that the CLEP test itself would be rather simple because of the simplicity of the questions in the guidebook. On test day however, the test itself proved difficult and detailed. Don't let this guide lull you into complacency - you'll need to study to much more depth than the questions in this little dud.
