Although this version is typical of the countless 31 or so Public Domain versions of Bonanzas you will find out there, this version has one good thing going for it. All of the Public Domain episodes are all together in one collection, and the quality is reasonably good! I work in Television and I know why the music is missing on all the current versions. Although these episodes are in the US Public Domain, the Music bed (Open and Close) was renewed or still under Copyright. In order to sell the episodes with the original music themes, the distributors would have to pay a royalty on each episode for the music, which would then cause the price to be much more. This underlying copyright is the reason for these episodes to be found this way. TV stations are allowed to run these with the original music, because they pay an annual Broadcast Fee under BMI and ASCAP for a "blanket performance license", which is paid to copyright holders of music for "performance to the public". The only way to get the Bonanza Episodes with the original music is to either copy it off the air (it is legal) or hope that the original copyright holder of the other Bonanza Series will release the original series with the music "restored". Otherwise these 31 episodes will not be seen until the underlying music copyright expires. NBC originally ran these and Paramount was the original distributor. You will enjoy these rare "lost episodes" despite the missing music themes. Besides, the price is MORE THAN FAIR for THIRTY-ONE HOUR-LONG EPISODES + THREE ORIGINAL OTHER TV SHOWS AS A BONUS. THOSE EPISODES HAVE THE ORIGINAL MUSIC (Non-Bonanza Shows). A GREAT BARGAIN!Read full review
anybody over 50 can probably remember sunday nights with adam , hoss , little joe , ben , and all the stars the appeared in guest spots !!!! those were the days , when you only had three choices, thats all the channels you had , unless you could fine tune the "antenna rotor" , climb the tower, get it from being "stuck" because someone turned it too far , then if you were really lucky , you might br able to pull in a fourth , or maybe even a fifth channel ! wow ! five channels , who woud believe it ! wait til tomorrow , when i can claim "braggng rights" that i had five channels tuned in , in one night ! the bonanza group , just made my weekend complete ! the burning map over the ponderosa, when the show started , showing the ponderosa , and lake tahoe , silver city, carson city, what a big ranch that would have been ! years later , i actually went to those places , carson city, and the place where they filmed the series, and i was especialy proud to have taken my own ride , quite a few times , up the long winding trail into the hills of silver city, and just imagined what it must have been like back then. i even took a trip to some of the old ghost towns, "drove" as far north as pyramid lake , and all the way south , down into california , and can only imagine what they went through back in those days , just to get from carson city and up around lake tahoe and back , it must have been beautiful country back then, because , it still is today , just a little more grown up i will always cherish those memories of the CARTWRIGHTS, and still wonder why adam couldnt stay ! it wasnt quite the same without him, but they are ALL gone now, and these shows on this dvd set helps bring them all back, again and again , to relive a spot in time that was carefree, safe, and fun . a time when dad was allowed to be a "dad" , boys had fun, but still Knew how to do "chores" and everybody "earned" what they had . if you remember the series , this is a great dvd , to bring back a few memories, and you will be reminded of all the "good times" when life was just plain old - - "SIMPLE" "BUY IT ! , YOULL LIKE IT " NOW I NEED TO FIND SKY KING , THE RIFLEMAN, BRANDED , THE LONE RANGER ,DALE AND ROY - AND TRIGGER ! , PALADIN , JOHNNY YUMA , AND THE HIGH CHAPPEREL I HOPE THE TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE WASNT TOO BORING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Read full review
My husband has many childhood memories of watching Bonanza (THE PONDEROSA) with Huas, Little Joe, PAW and all the the other actors. He is still to this day watching old reruns on various channels. When I saw this, I knew I had to purchase it for him. He does not have many lazy days unless he is sick, and I could picture him with a box of kleenex, hot tea & dry toast (made by me!); watching these 34 episodes all day long. There is no other reason than this to give my husband a bit of nostalgic pleasure to reminisce having a Bonanza day. Television these days lack a sense of character, family atmosphere of days gone by, and Integrity that the old classics poses. It is like the Judds singing "Grandpa tell me about the good ole' days". The days when brothers stuck together, families were deep rooted, and those families had a solid foundation. Loren Green played a character that depicts what a father was and should be. A father who shows unconditional love to his family, respects women, lives by a code of conduct and ethics that is now lacking in so many of us. A firm handshake would not break a covenant or verbal contract (no lawyer needed). You took the time to know your neighbors and to lend a helping hand when needed. I remember my "Grandpa" telling me stories of barn raising days where the whole community would come together to build a barn for a neighbor, the children played together, and the woman cooked all day long. Currently; my husband and myself, have a young girl living with us who has a 5 month old baby. WE are lending a helping hand to an individual who would other wise be homeless. WE did not know her before she moved in, but we opened our doors with love. She had never seen "Bonanza", "The Sound of Music", or the "Waltons". She came from a very disfunctional family and the ideal that families were like that has made a lasting impression. She is striving to break the generational curse of dysfunction to allow a wholesome, stable, and loving atmosphere for her child. Reality is, "Bonanza" is just a TV show, but it is a show that was somewhat real of those days. Now "Lassie" was fun to watch, but it really wasn't real. But even lassie, Benji, Shadow & Sassy (Homeward Bound)can all concur family values, love, and valuable lessons were all taught in old classic TV. We never had to censor 400 channels for nudity, language, and Violence with Classic TV. Where did Wholesome GO? Can we ever find it again? Do we ever stop to ponder why there is so much dysfunction in our lives during this era. Please do not get me wrong there was dysfunction back in those days, but neighbors, pastors, and the community were always there. One last thought: Who do we blame for the dramatic breakdown of the infrastructure of family? Then when we determine that; What can we do to fix the infrastructure that is so fractured. I hope in my corner of the world I will leave a legacy of love wherever I roam. Sincerely CharRead full review
