One Day in September is a chilling account of the Munich Olympic Massacre. But what is even more horrific is the uncovering of how inept the German Security Forces were, and to hear how basially the terrorists got away with their bloodshed. This is not a documentary for the weak of heart, or for those who are prone to rages, because it does invoke an angry response when you hear about the horrors of that day, and how a lot of bloodshed could have been avoided. The program does end with some severely graphic images of the dead, so some caution for those who have weak stomachs should be heeded. But the power of this documentary is the way in which the events were recounted, from multiple standpoints. It is a great documentary that has the viewer horrified but unable to turn away.
Good recap of a tragic historical event. Well worth watching if you've heard the words "1972 Olympics/Munich" in political conversations. This event is fundamental in understanding modern-day terrorist acts and unconventional warfare. It really shows a time where the Western world was not at all capable with dealing with such an event. PRO: I like how the movie depicted the Germans as totally incompetent, which of course even by their own admittance, they were. By watching the German authorities make countless mistakes, you immediately get a mental checklist of things to avoid in such a situation. CONS: Michael Douglas narrated this documentary. I usually like him but I found that he did not take his job very seriously. It was a rush job on his part and it is evident with mistakes in pronunciation and so on. Still, not by any means reason enough not to watch the movie.Read full review
One of my strongest memories of my grandparents farm was of watching the 1972 Olympics on their TV while vacationing there. I have faint memories of the tragedy that transpired thirty odd years ago and watching this documentary brings it all back for me. This is one of the best documentaries out there. It tells simply and clearly what happened and why. Using both news footage of the event and interviews conducted recently, amazingly the interviews include one with the only surviving terrorist who is now in hiding, this story tells the tale completely and compellingly. You get sucked into it even though you know whats going to happen, or think you do. The amazing thing about this film is that even if you know what happened it still manages to surprise you with new information that wasn't available before.Read full review
This is a stunning piece of film making. Especially if you are old enough to remember. I do. I was 10 years old when this happened in Munich, Germany back in 1972. It's as if the world stood still. A huge tragedy that should NEVER be forgotten. It hits home especially during the Olympics. I watched it again today after the closing ceremonies in Beijing. It certainly puts things into perspective. A MUST-SEE film for all documentary fans. Roger Mazerolle Amherstview, Ontario, Canada
