I purchased this synth used and will be primarily using it for both live and studio work. Some of the sounds are a bit dated, but that is to be expected of something which is 16 years old. It is quite flexible and relatively easy to program when using a software editor. You can get very complex sounds by combining multiple patches into Performances and the 64 note polyphony means you won't have dropped or stolen notes. The weakest link for this synth is the drum kits. They sound a bit 1 dimensional compare to todays software drum plug ins. I have no plans to use the drum sounds so it's not a deal breaker for me. The piano and electric piano sounds are very good, strings are lush and full sounding and even the organ sounds are pretty decent thanks to Roland including the Leslie simulator found on it's VK line of organs/Synths. I also like the digital out option and I run this synth direct to my audio interface via SPDIF in the studio for crystal clear sound. The effects are plentiful and though the reverbs are a bit old school sounding, most of the other effects are perfectly usable. One note about using Roland's Software editor - It has not been updated in quite some time so I could not get it working with a current Mac Mini running OS X 10.9. Luckily for me, I had an older Mac laptop sitting idle with an older OS and it works just fine with the Roland software. Perfect Circuit were easy to deal with. They shipped quickly and packaged the unit well, so no complaints there. Overall, an excellent piece of kit with a lot of useful sounds and features for the money.Read full review

Roland xv-5050 a must have rack unit and here is why First things first it is easy to use but you will want the owners manual. This unit has the “Hydrogen patch” this patch nails the Kraftwerk autobahn Sound and the Jean-Michel Jarre oxygen and equinoxe sound as well. The classic sounds were eminent or solina strings instruments. That slow grind sound is nailed with this xv-5050. Lots of other patch sounds on this unit that are not found on the newer units like the Roland Integra 7. Kinda a surprise that roland did not have this patch on the integra 7 for sure! This does pair up well with the other Roland synths as a controller as well as the a88 and the a800 midi controllers. These days pricing is $200.00 usd to $350.00 usd depending on the deal you find. There are also srx expansion sounds for this unit as it will hold up to two at a time. The best expansion is the srx-07 keys. And they sell for BIG bucks. But you can get all of the srx modules on the integra 7. so snag one when you can!Read full review
