I bought this Kirby after reading a review about the suction power that Kirby has vs. the Dyson. I was also aware that the tools weren't as accessible as the Dyson, and I was OK with that. After I received my Kirby, I vacuumed my carpets and then was ready for the transition to stair and dusting tools. I thought it would take some time, but it was relatively fast and easy. Also, I had vacuumed my stairs with my daughters Dyson, and was impressed, but after I vacuumed with the Kirby, I found there was no comparison. The Kirby was far better. It sucked up all the dust, AND grabbed the dog/cat hair with ease. I also ordered some bags and belts from Ebay, and I received enough for probably a year or two for barely nothing. So far, I am happy with my Kirby, and from what I've heard, I will be happy for many years to come.Read full review
This is a great vacuum. Built like a tank and performs better than any other vacuum I've ever had. Some of the attachments are a little cumbersome to get on and off but once you get the hang of it, it's not too bad. I would much rather have a quality vacuum with cumbersome attachments, than a vacuum that is easy to use but doesn't perform well and doesn't last a long time.

This seems to be a good vacuum. It's a lot lighter than the Kirbys of yesterday. It has a "drive" feature which makes it easy to push on the carpet. It also has a "Neutral" feature which makes it easy to move when not on. It seems to vacuum bare floors well, also. I have not used the attachments, yet. As being a used item, I want to wash all of the attachments, first & get the packing peanuts out of them. I have not bought more filter bags, yet, but, will probably get them from ebay, also.
There are many reasons I like kirby vacuums. The heavy duty materials their made of for extremely long and almost trouble free service life of this product. Their versatility to convert for many different household uses. from upright to canister, for carpet of different piles and hardwood floors, upholstery, shampooer, mes-sager and sander to name a few. The tech drive feature that gives the user the feel of a self propelled vacuum. Parts availability, you can still get parts for the older models, making them work like new again. and with a little effort you can clean them up, so you can almost get them to look like new also. These units do a very good job cleaning and I hope to see this product for many more years to come. Unfortunately these units are on the pricey side unless you find one refurbished or a friend or neighbor that no longer uses it for a variety of reasons one of which might because of the weight compared to other vacuumsRead full review
The Kirby G4 (and all self-propelled models) are quality, durable, high performance machines, that are a pleasure to use. This Kirby G4 vacuum replaces a Hoover self propelled. The Hoover was OK, but I have repaired it a few times and the cable controlling the self propulsion drive just snapped. That cable would take hours to replace. And after I replaced it the vacuum would still be an OK, plastic wonder, certain to require more repairs as time goes on. So, I went looking for another self-propelled upright vacuum - not many available now. When my search lead me to the now self-propelled Kirby, and I found that I could buy a used one on ebay for cheap, the search was over. I had an older pre-self propulsion Kirby years ago and passed it to a daughter when pushing it around became a chore. Still in service, still a chore to push on carpets. I need self propulsion - my back hurts without it. Hoover self propulsion is uncomfortable - it jerks forward and back. My wife hates it. The Kirby self propulsion is a dream - smooth and natural. At retail, Kirby is insanely priced; used on ebay, a bargain. Kirby vacs are so durable, that I did not question purchasing a used one. Carpet vacuuming: Kirby excels. Picks up more than the Hoover. Carpet shampooing: the Carpet Shampoo System (attachment) does a great job but is not as convenient as those dedicated home carpet "steam" cleaners. Again, those home "steam" cleaners are all plastic. I have spent many hours repairing Hoover "steam" cleaners and have trashed a few. I do not expect to be repairing the Kirby Carpet Shampoo System (attachment). Hard floor cleaning: with the snap-on Hard Floor Pad it does a great job in open areas. The bulk of the vac prevents getting under those low tables, couches, etc. The Surface Nozzle, used with hose and wands reaches all, like a canister vac. My old Hoover could not disable the brush and just scattered debris on bare floors. Canister mode: change the handle (easy), replace the floor head with the hose (not too bad), lug the vac around - a chore, but no worse than any other upright vac. I leave the upright handle in place and "drive" the vac to its canister work with the self-propulsion feature. Kirby disadvantages: weight, bulk, procedure for converting between floor head and hose, maneuverability (particularly with full bag), no on-board tool storage. Kirby advantages: quality, durability, superb self propulsion, attachments galore - including a carpet shampooer and a funky orbital sander/buffer/massager(??).Read full review
