Product Information

Canyon Bomber is a single-screen action game of timing and accuracy, originally considered by its creators a sort of "upside down Breakout." Players follow zeppelins, and later airplanes, that automatically fly back and forth across the top of the screen, above a large canyon filled with little "brick" circles. Each circle encloses a small numeral indicating its point value. Circles at the top of the pile are worth one point, and values range up to four points for circles down on the canyon floor. As the aircraft patrols overhead, the player presses a button to release bombs. Players receive the points for the circles their bombs destroy. The supply of bombs is unlimited, but each craft can have only a single bomb in the air at a time. There are always two aircraft in play, one black and the other white.

Throughout the game, the two aircraft fly above the canyon dropping bombs, destroying circles, and scoring points -- the computer controls the second craft in the single-player mode. Moving ahead at the slow speed of the zeppelins, bombs fall in a slight arc, requiring players to estimate their trajectory forward and down into the field of circles below. When the zeppelins are replaced with faster-moving planes, the bombs' angle of descent is more horizontal. Play continues until both aircraft have dropped three bombs that missed all targets. It's difficult to miss in the beginning of the game, when the canyon is full, but each bomb can destroy multiple circles, and soon players are challenged to take accurate, well-timed shots at the scant remaining clumps of targets in the nooks of the canyon walls.
