In Ice Trek for the Intellivision, players guide Vali the Avenger -- a Norse hero with a sweet set of skis on his feet -- through an icy adventure. In the first screen, Vali has to avoid hitting an oncoming stampede of caribou simply by getting out of the way. This is easier said than done when there are also trees to be avoided, and if Vali slams into a caribou, an avenging Wildlife Goddess appears to hound him. In the second, and possibly most unique, stage of the game, players help Vali build a bridge out of floating icebergs. Vali must "hook" them and reel them in to add to the length of the bridge, which runs from the bottom of the screen to (hopefully) the top, and must also be on the lookout for other chunks of ice which can knock down everything he's built behind him -- or right underneath his feet. Then it's onto the third stage, which is a bit of a boss screen minus the boss: Vali must take out the defensive turrets at the icy castle of Kaltkron the Terrible. Once left undefended, the castle can be destroyed, and the game begins anew.
Boasting Imagic's usual flair for audiovisual innovation and just plain fun, Ice Trek is another excellent game for the Intellivision. Sometimes the disc controllers can cause a bit of frustration, but with a bit of patience and a steady hand, Ice Trek is a cool dose of frozen fun.
