1800 years ago the Orochi first made an appearance in the world, causing massive destruction and death. But two clans faced the Orochi and managed to prevail. Their names were Kusanagi and Yagami. Then the clan of Yata sealed the Orochi power to keep it from returning to the world. But 660 years ago the Yagami clan, jealous of the power of the Kusanagi, made a pact with the Orochi. Orochi blood ran through the Yagami, and flames they were able to shoot turned from crimson to purple.

The King of Fighters '96 tournament ended with the appearance of Goenitz, the Orochi master of wind. He had a grand scheme planned, the reawakening of Orochi. But to do that he would need to gather fighting energy. This was conveniently provided in the form of the King of Fighters tournaments. But a combined attack by Kyo Kusanagi and Iori Yagami ended his life before he could finish the reawakening.

The year is 1997. The King of Fighters '96 tournament was such a financial success that another one would be held this year. The fights would take place in different locations around the world and televised around the world. Nine teams of three fighters each, as well as a pair of single entries, will compete in this year's tournament.

Most of the characters from '96 make return appearances, with a few notable exceptions. Team England was unable to locate Kasumi Todoh for this year's tournament, and have taken on last year's host Chizuru Kagura as the third member. Geese Howard and his team are gone. Instead Geese has sent his right hand man Billy Kane with series newcomers Ryuji Yamazaki and Blue Mary to compete. A team of three musicians has also signed on as the New Face Team. To top it all off, veteran Iori Yagami and newcomer Shingo Yabuki are single entries.

In addition to choosing teams of three characters, in King of Fighters '97 players also choose to play in either Advanced or Extra mode. In Advanced mode players charge up their power meter by attacking or defending, and can store up to three stocks. In Extra mode players may not store any stocks, but can charge up with a special charging technique. The choice of mode also influences nuances in gameplay, like whether characters can roll or dodge.

Fighters have access to their special techniques and desperation moves. But this time around, players also have access to super desperation moves, even more powerful and damaging than the desperation move. The requirements for throwing super desperations vary depending on whether players are using Advanced or Extra mode.
