Panel Action Bingo for Game Boy is a quirky little game that pits the reflexes of a bird (you) against those of a cat (the computer). The "Plot": Rather than each participant waiting to find matches on their own board, both move around simultaneously on the same one. Each scrambles to mark off randomly placed consecutive numbers, (or letters) before the other. The first to accumulate 5 in a row, column, or diagonally wins the round. If no one gets a string of 5, the round concludes as a draw (the victory going to whoever marked the most tiles). If the cat out-maneuvers you, you'll lose and replay the level again until you run out of tries (or patience). Other hazards include black holes (an instant lose) and stars (a barrier). Playing it: The pace starts off slow, but picks up considerably by the 'teen levels. If you're two moves away from a "Bingo", you can guard that tile forcing the cat to take the next consecutive one & putting you in place for the win. So, despite the simplicity, there's a touch of strategy involved too. Bonus: Sandwiched between every 3 levels is a bonus round in which a character (I think it's a mole) pops up out of the ground in random spots. You & the cat compete to tag as many of them as possible earning you bonus points. Other Modes: You can choose numbers or letters. Ice mode makes you slide past the tiles so you'll have to mark them off "on the fly". To me, this feels like just a cheap way to up the difficulty by substituting poorer controls. There are 2 types of "hidden" mode that make it into more of a guessing game, some other game tweaks and an always welcome 2 player option (for those with 2 copies of the game & a link cable). Pro(+)/Con(-) Break-down: + Simple, but decent, clear graphics. + Good music (even if it is basically one tune). - Not much variation in game play makes it get tiresome after a while. - There are more substantial puzzlers like Tetris, Dr. Mario and Daedalian Opus out there. It's about average in every way, but still alright as an old school "brain game". Strange set-up, but a fun and addictive puzzle game. You can waste a lot of hours on this one! Watch out for the black holes!
