This is one of the few truly groundbreaking games in recent years. DDR motivates people to physically move and press buttons with their feet to progress through the game. This one motivates you to actually break a sweat and enjoy doing it. I don't enjoy cardio. I don't enjoy aerobic workouts. But there is a definite draw to this game that keeps me coming back for more 3 or 4 times a week. The game tailors itself around your physical stats, thanks to a 15 minute physical evaluation when you first turn on the game. Resting heart rate, height, weight, flexibility, maximum situps/pushups/squats are counted and logged. A recommended workout is then presented to you and it's up to you to do it. It's pretty easy to stick to it also since the workouts change literally every time you do them. No two workouts are ever the same. By completing X number of workouts you "unlock" new locations and music choices. This means that after a couple of weeks, you have a pretty good variety of selections to help keep things fresh. One of the bigger perks that I enjoy about it is something rarely touched on in reviews about this game: recipes. This game has several thousand recipes on the disk. And the food is good too! All you do is select a daily calorie intake, pick a menu style, flip through your choices, and get ready to make fast and healthy meals. I only gave this game 4/5 stars. It loses a point thanks to the occasional rhythm glitch where Mya (the virtual trainer) loses synch with the musical beat. But she picks it back up pretty fast so you aren't standing around waiting for her to get her groove back. There are just a few beats where you will most likely be out of synch with her until she regains her rhythm. All things considered, I have recomended this game to a number of friends. It's different, doesn't involve flaming swords, and the only person you are competing against is yourself. So don't let yourself down and pick this game up. It's worth it.Read full review
I got this game for my wife when it was obvious that neither of us could actually make it to the gym. The game is a first person interaction with Maya, your personal trainer. Maya starts with an evaluation of your fitness and your goals. From that, a personal training program is created for you along with a menu. The workouts can incorporate hand weights, steps, and a workout ball. You can select for each workout which items you would like to use. There are 5 major areas of workouts: weight loss, cardio, upper body strength, core body strength, and lower body strength. Maya will recommend a session for each visit, but you can change it. Workouts go in stages. After each stage Maya will give you the chance to say whether the intensity was too light, just right, or too heavy. Be aware that if you say the workout was too light, she'll move the intensity up pretty quickly. The game also has a yoga workout but my wife has not used it. I have reviewed the suggested menus and I was very impressed. There are several menu plans that offer a good variety of choices. Each menu can be tailored to a specific calorie budget. My wife's primary complaint about the program is the inability to track your weight to your pace. Maya will ask you for your latest weight occasionally but it is not very frequent. Maya will also lightly scold you for missing a scheduled workout day, even if you have added days during the week.Read full review
I read about this in Electronic Gaming Monthly back December of 2004. I had just begun my weight loss journey and was looking to add on to my exercise routine. At one point in my life I weighed in at 481lbs, I like to tell people I weighed more than Jared from the Subway commercials. Anyhoo, at tax refund time I picked this up at Best Buy and haven't regretted it since. Unlike the DVDs and videos that are out for exercise, this "game" tailors your workout based on you strengths and what path you want to follow (weight loss, flexibility, etc.). There is a short health evaluation that is done beforehand (resting heart rate, workout heart rate, how many push ups, crunches can you do, etc.) and then the workouts begin. Each day focuses on a different area (weight loss, cardio, upper body strength, etc.) and the routine is NEVER the same! Maia can also add exercise equipment you may already own into the routines! There are several different locales and music tracks to unlock as you stay faithful to the workouts. You can do 15min to 60min workouts and choose the days to work out. A fitness evaluation is done every 10 workouts and she keeps track of your progress over the weeks/months. There is also a meal planner side that can make up daily meal menus and recipes to help with your weight loss (I don't use that side of the program...). To date I have lost over 230lbs, most of that is due to Maia and Yourself!Fitness. I would be lost without Maia, my Xbox crashed the other week and I had to be without her for a week or so until I could get a replacement. I used exercise DVDs to fill the void, but I just could not take the repetition. Of course your mileage may vary, still I would HIGHLY recommend picking this "game" up! I am so happy with Yourself Fitness! I find myself wanting to work out but not wanting to drive all the way to the gym, then when I get to the gym I don't really know what to do with myself! With Yourself Fitness, Mya is your personal trainer...she stops to see if your keeping up or if things are too easy and will adjust the workout accordingly. I have lost 4 lbs in 3 weeks and already feel stronger. You will be amazed as you can also incorporate hand weights, a stability ball, heart rate monitor into your workouts. You set up a schedule as to when you will work out. Its not boring because Mya talks to you and there is music to choose from too. A really excellent product I wish I would have bought long ago!!
Mia personalizes a training program for you which includes aerobics, strength training, and yoga. You can use a heart monitor, steps, weights, and a stability ball if you have them. If not, your workouts will be customized without them. There are menu plans for three different calorie allotments. All moves are clearly described and demonstrated. This is NOT a yoga tutorial but an actual workout regimen for losing weight, gaining strength, or just maintaining. I would highly recommend it over other workout videos for beginners to early advanced.
