Its a great game for a mech fan. Although it doesnt have as many parts as the previous game, it quickly makes up for it with the detail, graphics, full customization, and new features such as the quick boost. Also it has online capabilities, so you can prove your superiority amongst other pilots. The game itself is relatively short, with a great many missions not lasting to long if your a great player. Newcomers will love the controls, the weapons, the designs, mission, and ofcourse, your own self made mech, which you can customize again anytime (outside of missions). You can have a tank mech with heavy weapons like grenade launchers, or a lightweight mech with machine guns, many possibilities with almost no restricition, with the only restriction being that when customizing an ac, beware that the mech isnt to heavy loaded with guns with the wrong type of legs, or your mech will slow down. To much energy consumption will make your mech generator charge fill up more slowly. The game is known for its realism, obviously if you have a lightweight mech, and you have too many heavy weapons, your going to slow down. Stabilizers have also been added to adjust the weight of your mech, since using a heavy left shoulder weapon would make your mech turn or boost faster to the left, the stabilizers add counter weight, so you can boost around normally, without an advantage on one side and disadvantage on another, or you can add more weight and make your boosting to one side a great advantage (Although eventually you may find that this may be a weakness.) For control, weapon schemes, parts, customization, and realism, its a great game to try out and play , if your not a mech fan, this game may get you into the genre. Its absolutely worth renting, I found it worth buying, and if you give the game a test spin, you may like it very much as well.Read full review
The action is fast. Combat is fun. A LOT of the game is trial and error, but once you figure out the game's tricks, you can have loads of fun. Pay attention to your mission objective, only focus on that. Listen to ALL of the mission briefings at least once. Don't focus on destroying every enemy in the level. That's a great way to run out of ammo, get killed, or lower your mission rank. Plus, the game just becomes tedious and boring if you do that. How to have fun with this game: set your own personal goals, like 1. Complete the mission within a certain amount of time 2. Finish a mission using only a blade 3. Try not get shot at too much IMPORTANT advice on picking your initial AC: This is the one that you will be using for the majority of the game. How hard, how easy, how difficult, how FRUSTRATING the game can be is mostly dependent on the initial AC. You can't customize these, because they belong to the company. You have to build an identical one out of unlocked parts you have (thankfully, the game does this for you). This costs LOTSAMONEY. Buying these parts, and then changing them out too frequently (get this, it costs money to REMOVE PARTS), will sap all of your cash if you bother with this at the beginning of the game. Depending on what AC you initially pick, parts belonging to other types of ACs will be locked away for a long time. If you are patient, and you find a lot of today's games not challenging, this game may be for you. Just be patient, and stick with it. If you want to discover the game for yourself, stop reading. Because I'm about to reveal some tricks that could: 1. Not pertain to your play style, and spoil the game for you 2. Lessen the difficulty and frustration of certain parts the game 3. Increase the difficulty and frustration of other parts of the game (I'm stuck on the mission SEA OF BLOOD, so my word is not the gospel). If you want to beat SWARMS OF RED EYES and save yourself a boat load of FRUSTRATION : PICK AN AC WITH A MACHINE GUN (not gatling guns, many have a lower ammo count). There are only two initial ACs that have machine guns (to my knowledge), they are under the HARD handing class. One is called the SALAUX, the other is the 03-ALIYA. If you want to S rank a lot of the missions on your first go, you want an AC with a blade. The white EASY handling AC (your first option) with the blade is good at that, and has decent air time and over boosting, BUT IS ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE AT EVERYTHING ELSE. I would not use this one. The 03-ALIYA? It has a blade!! And a laser cannon!! It's REALLY fast on the ground, and provided you are a dedicated and clever pilot, will get you S ranks. THIS AC IS HARD CLASS FOR A REASON. This is a ground based AC, it does not have a good amount of air time, only just enough for it not to be a big problem. The blade is VERY short, you will need to be very precise when doing melee combat (the DESERT WOLF mission will require some retries before you get it right.) Over boosting is non existent with this AC. The one time this is a necessity is during the mission SHARPSHOOTING: you will barely make it across the water. This AC's laser will drain your boost meter quickly, so it has the potential to be the ugly duckling of your weapons. I am currently stuck on SEA OF BLOOD, a water based mission. This AC performs very badly over water if you have to perform a lot of quick boosting (this is a battle versus a NEXT type AC, so this is a given.Read full review
If you liked the previous Armored Core games (I have 2 and 3), you'll undoubtedly enjoy this one. The same familiar controls and gameplay style with revamped graphics will make it easy to jump right in and enjoy the heck out of it. For players new to the AC game series, the handling of your armored core is not hard to get the hang of. After the tutorial and one or two missions, you'll be blazing around like nobody's business. Customizing your unit's design, color scheme, and individual parts (head, body, weapons, leg-type, etc.) will offer plenty of gameplay alone. For those who don't really care much about customizing their vehicle (but really, who doesn't?), it's simple to play right through with one of the default designs, though you may want to at least upgrade armor and weapons occasionally. =) Overall, this game is (in my opinion) going to be most rewarding for previous players of the series, but as I noted, it'll still be awesome for anyone who's never even heard of Armored Core. Good luck!Read full review
The short answer is yes! Now you may ask what is my reasoning that brings me to this conclusion? Obviously much like you would expect the graphics are vastly improved! But the best part for me was the fact that you can control your AC with both joysticks instead of just with the one and the shoulder buttons. I think that is a long over due upgrade to the series! Game play is pretty much the same so if you are a fan of the series you won't be disappointed in that regard. The custom paint jobs are even better than the previous Armored Cores. Which say's a lot to me because I've always enjoyed making my AC look like I want it. Then adding the weapons I want to it! The negatives or at least the negatives for me anyway are as follows: First off I didn't like how they put a boundary that counts as being out of the combat area when you are using your jump jets to fly. I personally had a few times where I was flying to avoid incoming shots and I ended up flying out of the area and having to restart the mission. That can get frustrating fast if you do it a few times. Secondly I think the difficulty level isn't high enough! There's a little learning curb in the Arena battles but once you figure it out it's pretty easy to win evry arena battle. So overall it's a good game but maybe with the difficulty not being as touch as I like it to be; made it a little shorter game than I would have wanted it to be!Read full review
This version of Armored Core 4 is far superior than it's brother in the 360 console; it boasts more graphical prowess than AC4-360. But aside that, the game takes the player in the role of a NEXT, which means you are RAVEN no more like in the previous games. But the newly designed Armored Core(s) have the ability to boost in such high velocities with minimal hindrance and does possess the qualities of having "Human Plus" or simply put, more enhanced than the average AC from the previous Armored Core series. You can tune the ACs to your hearts content and even include additional armor padding to further the stats in terms of "armor/PA retrification." But the most noticeable feature is the schematics section of the game. Each time you purchase, obtain, or challenge ACs, you gain the option to acquire schematics or blueprints for AC designs with various abilities, parts, and pre-customed armaments. Graphically, it technically shows the power of the PS3, but does have limits... it could be better eventually when later Armored Core games become available. Great game though, so do not miss this mecha game.Read full review
