Banjo-Pilot is often overlooked amongst the other racing games on the GBA, and it’s easy to see why, with its niche cast of characters and gameplay that just evokes saying “oh, it’s just another Mario Kart ripoff”. What you end up getting is a racing game that’s way simpler to understand and play. The most basic controls feel tight and natural, and the more advanced techniques, like cutting corners with R, or doing loops with L, feel satisfying to pull off. The gameplay is alright, it’s what you’d expect from a racing game. In quality, however, it’s where this game excels at. The sound design is quite frankly, better than other similar games in the genre and console. There’s a good balance between character voices, environment sounds and music. The soundtrack is catchy, but sometimes unfitting. Still, it’s nothing that would get in your way. Graphically, it’s unusual to see GBA titles that use Mode-7 graphics while keeping a constant frame rate. But if Mode-7 graphics of the tracks and the camera shots weren’t enough, the sprite work of this game is also surprisingly stunning. In terms of content, this certainly meets the Rare standards of replay value. Tracks are unlocked gradually as you clear the Grand Prix cups, and Jiggy Challenges are certain to test your piloting skills. There’s also Time Trials, and Quick Races to race in every stage as you please. Participating in races of every kind rewards you with Pages, which you can redeem with Cheato to unlock additional modes, characters, and other goodies. If that wasn’t enough, this game also has a strong multiplayer. Granted, you need at least two copies to play the game, but the modes there are truly fun, including Grand Prix cups, Quick Races, 1v1 VS races, and a very solid Battle mode. And if that wasn’t enough, this game also has that trademark Rare sense of humor you would expect from a Banjo game. It’s quite unusual to see a racing game pack this much content into the base game. But if you can afford it, do yourself a favor and try this game for yourself.Read full review
