Just as the title says, this is actually a survival horror game for the Wii. The game starts out with some decent Menu Music but then takes a terrible turn for the worse when the game actually starts. The graphics don't look horrible but the story premise is probably one of the biggest stretches I have ever seen. You are Ray and you are going to the "Bug Island" with your love interest, Michelle, and your "best" friend Mike. Bug Island is an Island filled with, yup, you guessed it Bugs. The reason you are on the Island is to study these Gigantic versions of bugs you already know and hate back home. Michelle states that she loves bugs and is hoping that maybe they can develop better types of bug spray. Yup thats what she says, don't believe me? Rent/buy it then, see for yourself. After the initial opening story you can opt to take the tutorial, which I strongly suggest. Afterwards you are left alone at the camp as your "best" friend goes off with your love interest so he can tell her how much he is in love with her. Yup your best friend just stabbed you in the back and left you alone on an Island all by yourself with a trusty stick. The controls forbid you to use button presses to attack, you MUST swing the controller in order to strike enemies. You must strike upwards by holding up on the nunchuck, B on the Wiimote, and swinging the Wiimote. To swing down you must hold down on the nunchuck and hold B while swinging the Wiimote. If you hate Spiders like I do then this game might actually be scary, haven't gotten that far yet but I know they are coming. Now for a brief summary. All based on a 5 point scale... Controls - 1.0 the Wiimote makes it easy when aiming in first person mode but everything other than that is horrible, attack is a chore and you don't go up levels so if there is stuff you don't need to kill save your energy. Graphics - 3.0 the graphics aren't that bad but they are definitly not great, the game is dark, literally it takes place at night, so the Bugs and yourself don't have an enormous amount of detail. the surronding aren't that bad though. Music/Sounds - 4.0 All around the Music and SFX aren't that bad they can be creepy and all that jazz, to add to the effect. Replay Factor - 2.0 The only way your going to replay this game is to see how fast you can go through it when you unlock the samurai sword which is basically insta-kill when you swing. Two Endings one bad one good. Overall - 2.0 The Story is horrible and after the initial story its just search and find. If the Controls were not so horrible this could have actually been a very good game. When it takes 5 minutes to kill a group of bugs at the beginning of the game its not going to be a fun adventure. Also there are enemies known as Lizard Women and Canine Men. What the heck, Bug Island, howabout mutant Island. Avoid this game unless you are a collector like myself.Read full review
Pros + Great sound effects. + Creepy atmosphere. + Some cool weapons. (only toward the end though. uggghhh!!!) + Huge bosses. Cons - Why am I on Bug Island??? And how did all of these other people get there too??? - Controls are horrible. I was hoping to have some fun hack n' slash Wii remote time but it turned into "Why am I playing this game?" - Graphics are horrible and there is a lot of wandering around a boring forest. - Terrible acting, a lot of repition, and a lot of just plain boring parts bring the whole game down. Comments I went in expecting some fun hack n' slash at least. Instead I found "What not to do in your survivor horror games". There is no fun here, no fun at all, only frustration. Verdict Stay away before you get BUG ISLAND on your shoe. EEEWWWW!!!
like cheesy B horror movies, so when I saw the title "Escape from Bug Island" I knew I wanted to play this game. The graphics are really wonderful, not 'cartoonish' compared with many wii titles. The back story is good & the game is challenging. It uses the wii remote & nunchuck well. You don't just swing your wii remote around all crazy & attack bugs - each type of bug has attacks that are best to defeat it so you can come up with a strategy. You collect weapons & food while searching the island for your friends. It's kind of like a mystery I've found a few clues that are to be left behind by others who have visited the island. It's a fun game & I recommend it, but if you aren't sure, rent it first - you may be surprised to find that you like it.
Escape From Bug Island is, at it's best, a wonderful homage to the classic B-movie horror films of the 1950's. At it's worst, it is a frustrating, overly-easy experience with terrible voice acting and sub par graphics, even for the Wii. However, I rather enjoyed the experience. If you start playing with low expectations, you will enjoy this game. Make no mistake, this is by no means a game of Resident Evil 4's caliber. But, if you enjoy a campy horror adventure and relish in the ability to play through the big bug horror films of old, this game serves it's purpose well. But, if you are a graphics fan and look for a little bit more content to your games, steer clear of this one.
Controls are fairly easy to understand, a weird cast of characters, and a little too much intro without being able to move on, but kinda fun to play. Weird bugs, and giant praying mantises' to kill or avoid.
