Surf's Up is based on the 2007 animated film with the same name. You play a penguin who surfs (duh!). I actually liked the movie and just randomly bought this game one day. Story: The plot of the movie is never really used in the game. It of course has all the same names, locations, and people from the movie but it just kind of has you go from place to place for no reason. It's too bad that the story doesn't exist in this game but oh well. Graphics: Graphically this game looks pretty good. The water effects are pretty cool. The items and stuff in the levels also looks good. What made me realize how nice the game looked was when I noticed how my character actually had a wet shine to him from the surfing. It's a nice little touch and he really looked like he just got out of the water. Sound: The game uses the actors from the animated film which is cool but they aren't used except for brief sound clips if you get near them in the stages. The music has songs by A and by The Plain White T's. A very Indie feel for sure and it fits the surfing theme rather well. Sound effects could have been better but it’s a low-budget game so what do you expect? The waves don’t really make good wave noises (if that makes since) and most of the sound effects for crashing and picking up items are pretty lame. Control: Control in the game is very easy. It is like a REALLY simplified version of the Tony Hawk Pro Skater games. You move with the left analog stick. L trigger is used to grind the top of a wave. A simple trick is done with the A button, advance tricks are done with the B button. Y button activates “Stoke Mode” which does a few special tricks for a short period of time. X allows for freestyle movement with the right analog stick. Gameplay: So the game has 5 locations but besides the layout they play pretty much the same. Each stage has 4 things to do in them and you can do them in whatever order you want (you can also retry each map and location as much as you want). There are two scores to go for. A semi-easy score and the hardcore score. Once you get better boards and learn the courses the harder score will be super easy. After that there are some penguins idols floating around the levels. Collect them to unlock new items in the game. You also can go through X amount of gates. There are some mini games that are fun but short. The game took me just a few hours to beat but I am an experienced gamer. Like I said above, It is almost like a really simple Tony Hawk and I played those for years, so this game was super easy. But I would think that a younger kid it might have a lot more playing time. All said and done I must admit I enjoyed playing this game. It's rather simple and doesn't have a whole lot to offer but as a kid's game it's very pleasing. Kids will love it and parents will enjoy playing it with their kids. It’s a great family game for sure!!! Story - 2/10 Graphics - 9/10 Sound - 9/10 Control - 9/10 Game Play - 8/10 Replay Value - 6/10 Overall Score - 8/10Read full review
Haha, this game is completely awesome for kids whoenjoyed the movie, as well as grown ups who enjoyed it too. They use the same voice actors for it and in many ways, the game is an extension of what happens in certain parts of the film. The gameplay is good, nothing too complicated to try to handle, the controls are smooth and the moves are easy to pull off and look awesome when the character does them onscreen. The sound is okay, I'm not a big fan of emo at all, so that was kinda blah for me, but you can turn it off and play your own soundtrack from an ipod or whatever. The graphics are good, nothing too crazy looking, the water looks real at some points and the obstacles are good looking for the most part. But, the sound and graphics are the least important for me in this game...It plays so well if you enjoy old school games like California Games or things like that. The game's a little short and advanced players will most likely make it through in less than a day, but if you take your time and use all of the boards that you get and dont' rush to get achievement points, you can make it last. Overall, I thought the game was excellent. I'm a huge fan of the movie, and love the fact that they make a lot of those characters available to surf as...the best one by far is Arnold...the little penguin boy with a big surfboard...he's too cute and funny and his moves are top notch...Read full review
I bought the full copy of Surf's Up! for my sons because they were given an Xbox 360 for Christmas 2008 that came with a game sampler disc. They enjoyed playing the sample that I figured what the heck, I'll give it a shot. When they say it is rated E for Everyone, they mean it. Anyone who can handle the controller can play this game and it has a tutorial section to help get first-time players started. It is good, clean fun for everyone. The graphics are really good and the music rocks according to my sons. It is a blast just to sit and watch them play it with the wave tricks that can be done as well as the ramp jumps and rail slides. The best part to me is that you can play as one of several characters from the movie and there are so many different places around the island to surf. It is also really cute when your character hits a rock and crashes because it looks like the screen cracks and it is nice that there is no profanity involved for a change. We all also love the little sports reports from the walrus just like in the movie that kind of give you a heads up as to what to expect in the next section while keeping you in stitches from laughing so hard. One of my sons is special needs and has always had problems playing any kind of video games. If it was racing he was bouncing off the walls or running backward and his lack of hand-eye coordination made it all but impossible for him to play any video games with any sort of success. He can play Surf's Up! and do all sorts of tricks and actually pass levels! This game is very minimally frustrating to the novice player and doesn't take long for the more experienced players to be doing killer tricks and scoring very high points. We really have nothing bad to say about this game and would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for good, clean family fun for all ages.Read full review
Great Game and a lot of fun. Surf through the game with tricks, get bonus points with boost. Great graphics and varity of character to choose from. Highly recommended and a great movie.
I recently oredered Surf's UP for the xbox 360. It didn't take very long to get here. The game is really cool. It has neat goals and stages. The music in it is good. The controls aren't too difficult to figure out. My kids and I love this game and have played for hours.
