For the hobbyist chess player. At the low and medium levels in the story line, the game throws pieces away. The medium levels offer a bit more exciting play, in a way like Chessmaster where less material is thrown away but then the game starts playing better tactically. The 1st mystery character level requires some knowledge of endgame play. Tactically the play seems to be sound although if you last long enough some characters will blunder. Haven't reached the last level yet but you can try this using quick play and set all settings for best play. The game is still enjoyable at my level. If you have bad eyesight the storyline is really hard to read but the chess board itself isn't hard to see.
Haven't used it a whole lot, but I have noticed that unlike many computer chess games it is beatable, and this is important for learning and less confident chess players, but it does get harder and I haven't played it long enough to know how hard. I would like to add that this was an attempt to co-opt the gameboy to get my son away from Pokemon. So far it has been about as successful lollipops to crack addict - to get him away from Pokemon we just ban the gameboy for Monday through Thursday, and if he does good in school (he gets excellent grades) he can play it on the weekend. I got to go find virtual Kasparov and see if its anygood.
I WAS AT FIRST A LITTLE HESITANT ON PURCHASING THIS GAME, I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE TO HARD FOR MY EIGHT YEAR OLD DAUGHTER. SHE PICKED IT UP AND HAS NOT PUT DOWN SINCE. THE REASON FOR THIS PURCHASE WAS THAT I WAS TEACHING MY EIGHT YEAR OLD DAUGHTER HOW TO PLAY CHESS. AS AN INCENTIVE TO LEARN I BOUGHT THIS "VIDEO" GAME FOR HER, BEST THING I DID NOW I HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION WHEN I PLAY AGAINST HER.
