I just got this lens for my D700. It is REALLY wide... alot of times i zoom it in to the 14 or 15mm because it is so wide. the optics are alright. nothing special. I thought that the sigma 10-20 on my sony a700 was a better set up than this lens on my D700, Though the color fringing isnt as bad as the 10-20. from my testing, i found somethings great about the lens, and somethings that bugged me; listed below: Pros: - I only paid $350 for this lens - Less color Fringing than the Simga 10-20 on my Sony alpha A700 - Super rediculous wide - Focusing is almost macro style (I can focus on something 3-4 inches away) - Fairly compact compaired to nikon 14-24 - After you get away from the super wideness, image quality seems to be better. - HSM! Cons: - At 12mm, there is lots of vignetting and all corners are quite blurry - Images are a little soft - Still some color Fringing - Slower lens (f4.5-5.6) - Slower focusing than the 10-20 from what I can remember - No front filters can be used on this Interesting: - The cap for this confuses me... almost like the nikon 14-24, where you can pull it off (instead of the standard pinch lens caps)... but the top of the cap is a pinch... they should have kept it all one piece instead of two different pieces... - no front filters? really? I like to use a UV filter to keep the glass safe. - A thick lens. very thick indeed. - The lens hood is on there perminatly... can not remove it to save space in the camera bag decent lens for the price, but lens quality lacks a little. i will eventually replace it with the nikon 14-24 when the money is available. I really like how wide this lens can get though., and it is pretty quiet.Read full review
Sigma's 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 EX DG ASP HSM II Wide-Angle has been a great addition to my camera bag. I've pushed it in term of usable natural light and it's never disappointed. Respect that it is a wide angle lens and so it has it's limitations but its very good at the 12mm range. At its price point it's a great value.

Great lens for the price. Takes really good pictures. Nice wide view angle, or use the zoom to tighten it up. Well built, nice and compact.

I consider this one a very ugly looking lens... but it's results are the opposite. While some people paint it as a barely enough sharp lens, to me it has turned out to be a decent performer on my F5. As for performance, this is a full-fledged HSM (similar to the G-S lenses in the Nikon lineup) lens, without an aperture ring and with the Silent Wave equivalent for quiet focusing. It yields some pretty interesting results mostly because of it's notorious lack of distortion, which should be huge considering that it's wide end is at 12mm. In comparison, the two Nikon zooms I own that have 24mm as their widest end do produce some noticeable distortion. Why this one doesn't? Go figure... Not a lens for walking around, however, precisely because of it's strange range. If needed, do not consider it's aperture range a problem: for some reason, even in relatively low light, this lens has allowed me to hold my camera and shoot at relatively fastet than expected shutterspeeds. In short, it's surprising. I don't really know if I'll keep mine for long, but I won't part with it soon. Beware: the focusing and zoom rings turn the opposite direction in comparison with all my Nikon zooms. Takes a little time to realize this, but then, it's not a deal-breaker anyway.Read full review
The Sigma 12-24mm II feels very durable. It is built like a tank, thus I don't mind the weight. The entire exterior is made of metal, even the hood! *Hood not detachable. Rubber focus / zoom ring with enough pressure, so accidental turns of the rings don't occur. Good value for the money. Really a fraction of what Sigma and it's retailers ask. PROs Beats the Nikkor 14-24mm when it comes to build quality (metal vs plastic) and wider field of view, 122 degrees at 12mm Really nice appearance and feel Super-wide, even on aps-c Does Not bend lines. CONs Dark - Max aperture 4.5?! Which is only available at 12mm. Than it gets even darker :( meaning you have to drop your shutter speed, or increase ISO I am really satisfied with this lens. Does what I need it to - capture wide FoV :D
