Types of $10,000 Federal Reserve notes

These are some of the different versions of reasonably priced $10,000 US notes:

  • Fr.1135d: This $10,000 Federal Reserve note, issued in 1918, was not redeemable in gold and was simply legal tender in the US at the time it was issued. It features a portrait of Salmon P. Chase, Secretary of the Treasury under Abraham Lincoln and later Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court, on the front. On the back is a depiction of the Pilgrims embarking for the New World. Only five of these are known to have ever been issued.
  • Fr.2411: This version of the note is a gold certificate. It was issued in 1928 and depicts Salmon P. Chase on the front and says on the back, "THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS."
  • Fr.2230b: This version of the note looks the same as the Fr.2411 issue, except that it is classified as a Federal Reserve note rather than a gold certificate, meaning that it was not meant to be redeemable in gold. It was issued from 1928 to 1934.
Pre-Federal Reserve era $10,000 notes

The Federal Reserve Act was passed in the United States in 1913, so all U.S. currency issued before then was not issued by the Federal Reserve and therefore is technically not considered a type of Federal Reserve note. However, there were existing varieties of $10,000 notes before 1913. Here are some of them:

  • The Fr.1166l Proof: A run of these notes was issued between 1870 and 1875. They feature a portrait of Andrew Jackson on the front. Technically, this note is a gold certificate, meaning that it was originally redeemable for $10,000 worth of gold. There are only one of these notes currently known to still exist.
  • Fr.1223a Proof: These $10,000 gold certificates were issued in 1882. They feature a portrait of Andrew Jackson on the front and an orange design featuring an eagle, a seal and a declaration that these are $10,000 gold certificates on the back. Only two are now known to exist.
  • Fr.1225: This was yet another issue of $10,000 gold certificated depicting Andrew Jackson that was issued in 1900.
How much can a $10,000 note cost on eBay?

Since $10,000 notes were last issued back in 1934, they are extremely rare. You are not likely to ever see one in circulation, and they currently remain soundly in the possession of collectors. When they are put up for sale on eBay, it's virtually always for a far higher price than the note's $10,000 face value. Price varies depending on which issuance of the note you find. A note from the most recent issuance of 1934 can easily cost anywhere between $150,000 and $200,000. Older issuances, which are even rarer, cost even more. Depending on the circumstances, you may have to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to have one of these notes.
