I've been a fan of Beltronics for many years now, but this is the first time that I've been so impressed,I felt the need to write a review. For anyone that travels alot like myself, this detector will more than pay for itself, very quickly. Let's face it, anyone looking to buy a radar detector does not like to do the speed limit all the time. If your going to make the investment you might as well get something worth the money. I have detected radar from a sheriff's car well over 2 miles in advance with this model. That shold be all I really need to say. The only bad thing I can say is that you still do get false readings from things like those big electronic signs you see, mostly near construction. Have not found one yet that doesn't pick them up.
So far, it's the best radar detector I have ever owned. The detection range is phenomenal.I can pickup local Ka band from 2 miles ( nearly ) in my neighborhood, around a large bend . ( Normally I would have been had ) The auto mute feature is nice, it alerts loudly and clearly, tells you the band of the radar signal ( useful information if you know what your local LEO uses ) so you can make a decision to keep motoring or adjust your speed. Then the volume decreases to a level that is not shocking and remains low until the threat has passed. Combine it with the escort live smartcord for your Iphone and you also get the most comprehensive red light and speed camera database known to man! A handy feature indeed. It also connects you to the escort live community, and gives reports of other drivers observations of speed traps, radar and laser activity in the area you are driving in. It's truly a fine tool for staying informed of what's ahead of you while on the road. It's VERY hot where I live, if you leave it on and it overheats ( a common problem with my old V1 ) the unit turns itself off. When it cools off enough, it turns back on, runs a diagnostic test , and you are back in business. The former unit required being sent in for testing and repair for this issue. NOTE...the V1 gave no clue that it was not functioning properly. I found out the hard way...This aided in my decision by a large margin. The flat black case with no raised or shiny markers is a plus, but should be SOP on all high end radar systems. It dosen't throw any reflection onto the windshield.Read full review
THis is the only undetectable radar detector detector, that's why I bought it. I have had a valentine one for years, but their technology is 20 years old and isn't close to undetectable by newer radar detector detectors (Spector 2/3/4). If you do a little research, you will see. Though I thought I would get another valentine one if they figure out how to make it undetectable because of it's ability to locate radar with it's arrows and bogy counter, I have to say the STI Driver has less false alerts and works just as well, if not better. The v1 picks up led brake lights as they set off the laser, as do vehicle tracking systems like on infinity anad lexus that warn of lane wandering. I can't tell you how annoying all the false alerts were cause I got used to it, but now the STI driver has proved just how far behind V1 has fallen. I was able to pick up the STI driver for much less than a Valentine one by shopping around a little (thanks ebay!). I like the ability of the STI Driver to black out the display and turn off different bands of radar detection. The options are really nice to be able to customize the detector for your use. V1 has no options like this. Again, V1 has been a class act for several decades, and, still to this day, make a remarkable product considering how old it is, but the rest of the field has clearly passed by them. When I spoke to V1, they said they were working on something but had no time frae for their "eureka" moment... Not very encouraging and their website gives no hope or promise of new development. When I hear corporations start pitching phrases like "eureka moment" I run the other way because it they aren't even close to addressing the situation.Read full review
Technology keeps getting better and there is a continuous cat-and-mouse game being played out between the group that want to drive fast, and the group that try to prevent them from doing it. As of now, the STI certainly gives the former the advantage. Even the inexpensive detectors have now got more range than is necessary, and in fact, more sensitivity is not always a good thing - detecting the motion control doors at a 7-11 from 4 miles away is NOT a selling feature ... The anti-falsing circuitry in this device is amazing, best of the 5 Bel detectors I have had in the past (they have all been detected: Cat 5, Mouse 0). When you hear it, slow down. No questions. Because the diversion of the laser beam is so small, there is little to no reflected light to detect when the laser targets another vehicle. As with most window mounted laser detectors, if you hear it, pull over and get out your wallet .... The biggest advantage that this particular model has over ANY other detector currently on the market is its stealth ability. I have been running it for over 3 years in a state where detector detectors are rampant. At first I was quick to shut it off when I saw an approaching car. Now I just smile and wave ! Amazing. Until the cat comes up with some new detector detector technology, the mice can play happily all day long.Read full review
I have owned a Bel STi Driver for a few years and it has been a life saver. I live in Virginia (RDs are illegal here) and I won't go anywhere without it. I have many times passes a speed trap and don't bother to unplug anymore because it is truly undetectable. I have a very heavy foot and this thing is what I needed. The range is unbelievable, I once crossed I-77 in SFLA (alligator alley) and picked up a KA signal from about 10 miles out. I know that isn't typical but it goes to show on a very flat and very clear day the range is way more than enough to get to an appropriate speed. I recommend this RD to everyone. It has a high price point compared to others but considering all it offers, AND it is a hell of a detector it is 100% worth it. This RD has paid for itself over and over again. Also, since the software can be updated means I won't have to move onto to a Redline or Magnum anytime soon. I will buy another for my other cars I love it so much and don't want to be caught without one.Read full review
