we have used this on two trips now, does not even show the roads your on, shows you driving across the fields. takes forever to change your route. did not alert us to any const. or wrecks or delays, pretty much useless. save your money and buy a map or a different unit. and yes it has been updated, even talked to cust service and they say it is fine. if you dont need to depend on it to get somewhere it is ok. junk

I have been using Magellan for several years and have become familiar with its operation. When my previous unit was lost, I wanted a replacement that had both lifetime maps and traffic. This was the replacement unit. It works very well and gets me where I want to go. I also use Google Maps on my cellphone and am generally pleased with it EXCEPT that it uses too much of my data plan and uses too much power such that it cannot stay active for long trips even when plugged into the power plug. The Magellan maps are accurate, but just not as pleasing as the Google maps. The menu structure of the Magellan is sometimes confusing, and the street name/number does not always work during setup of the destination, if you don't have the exact name of the street. Google seems to help here. The directions are always good, and will always do as directed (avoid tolls), no highways, shortest distance, etc. I really like the audible warning to turn or take exit within 5 seconds. I wish the screen had a higher resolution.Read full review
I have had 3 TomTom's and bought this when my oldest TomTom stopped working. I thought I would try something new to compare. I have been using the Magellan for a few months now. Here are some items to consider: * I have not been able to update the maps. Also, the software loads everytime I turn on the computer, slowing the start-up process. Whereas the TomTom software only activates when you plug in your unit or start the software yourself. * The Magellan is very annoying by talking and ringing its bell constantantly. It is way too much and I find myself tuning it out and missing turns. * I find that it is not any faster at finding itself than the TomTom. Often it takes 90 to 360 seconds or more to determine where it is if not turned on in the same location where it was turned off. So no improvement over a TomTom, in fact it may be worse. * I miss the constant display of my speed. You can get it to show temporaily by pressing a spot on the screen, but I much prefer having it constantly displayed, as the TomTom does. * When typing in an address, most times the feature that blanks out the letters that it feels are unavailable is nice. However, it becomes very frustrating when the address is given in a different order and you are not able to type in a seacrh for the address in your order. For example, if you have a street name as "North Main Street" and the device only has it as "Main Street North" then it does not find the street. Or if you have the street as "Old Hwy 8" and it only knows it as "New Brighton Boulvard" or "County Road 8" you may never find the street in the devise. This is very frustrating when it happens and makes the device useless for that trip. * I find that it does not take me on the most efficient route quite often. On several occassions, it takes me around a block or up to another exit then brings me right back by where I just was, or could have been much more directly. * It does recalculate routes much sooner than a TomTom, as my TomToms keep trying to turn you around to go back to your old route for quite some time. However, this can be bad as the Magellan does not notify you of changing the route. This becomes an issue if you are slightly detoured. For example, the exit to my home is being worked on, so they temporaily moved the exist lane back a block. However, once I pass the normal exit, without warning, the Magellen guides me through a different route. I don't know if its because of traffic, or that it just doesn't recognize I am just off course on a construction zone bypass. If I were not familiar with the area, I would not know it wants me to go a much longer and slower route, as I am unaware it has changed course and I should instead follow the detour route. I am given no warning or information that I am to follow the detour, instead the unit takes me on another route. * The TomTom seems to give more and better information about gas stations, food, etc., and is easier to get back to your main route after making the stop, but only slightly more useful, so not a big selling point one way or the other. * Besides the lack of speed and more information about the trip distance and duration being on the TomTom screen all the time, the displays are very comparable with the views of the roads and which exits to take. Overall, I much prefer the TomTom. If I hadn't paid less than $60 for this unit I would be upset. It works, but is much less efficienRead full review
I just got this unit refurbished and it looks and works like a brand new one. I originally bought the kkmoon 7" screen which was brand new but didn't work right out of the box so i had to send it back. I found this Megellan refurbished and contacted the seller telling them I was planning a trip so needed it as soon as possible. They sent it out right away and i got it in two days. I'm very happy with the gps that I got a fantastic price. So far its very easy to work.
