GAIARES can be thought of as the Sega Genesis equivalent of the Nintendo staple GRADIUS. Rather than collecting and "cashing" pods for power ups though, the gimmick to GAIARES is that you can assimilate the enemies' weapons, so you have your choice of what enemy crafts to seek out before destroying them. And once at full power, your fire-power is simply awesome! Something that adds strategy to an otherwise straightforward shooter always gets bonus points in my book. Like GRADIUS though, GAIARES is one tough game. This is because of two simple things. 1) You die with one hit (unless you can grab a shield power up) and 2) there are only three checkpoints per each level - the start, right after the mid-boss, and right before the end boss. It is heartbreaking to go really far only to die and go back TO THE BEGINNING! Overall, GAIARES is a blast, though patience will no doubt be tested.Read full review
