This is a great amp. I had been using a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe for years (both recording and touring), and while that is a great amp (good tone for the money, and very durable), I was looking for something that was practical as a gigging amp but also had that next level tone I was looking for. I am very happy with this amp. Clean tone is very nice--clear, expressive and articulate, similar to some vintage Fender's I've played. Overdrive tones range from a really nice slight tube overdrive to a more saturated and compressed distortion. Don't believe some of the reviews you read--this amp does not do modern metal on its own, at best the high gain is appropriate for hard rock or maybe 80's metal if you have a guitar with high output pickups (although with a slight boost like my Tube Screamer coupled with the amp distortion you can get into face-melting territory with no problems). The Contour feature is also really cool for getting a metal sound, although I only use it when I'm playing some old Metallica just for fun--my lead tone includes more mids than your average metal scooped EQ. However, I don't play death metal, so there's no need for that here. The distortion is very harmonically rich, and expressive. The other thing that's great about this amp is the versatility, both with regard to the two channels (with 2 modes per channel) which are footswitchable and the 5-50 watt switch. It's like having two different amps with two channels each.Read full review
I've played everything from college campuses to hardcore punk clubs to church worship events. I've used effects pedals straight into the board, I've run thru combo amps and I've played shows thru a marshall full stack (2 412's with a 100 watt tube head). I bought this as a "i need to scale down to something my wife thinks is reasonable but will do everything i need" option. If I'd bought mesa boogie 30 years ago I never would've wasted my time on the Fender M80, the Randall RG80, the Laney AOR30 stack, the Laney Linebacker half stack, or the Marshall rig. I kid you not, this amp does it all, and it does it better. 8 different modes (two modes on each of the two channels plus a "push" option for each mode), the ability to switch from 50 mind melting watts down to 5 (still plenty loud in the basement), the legendary mesa tones, plus the option to add cabinets .... can't express how blown away and pleased i am. currently i run a highway one telecaster thru it mostly, but also use a fender american strat ('96), a les paul custom and a taylor acoustic (yep, even my acoustic) thru this. not one gets a single bad tone, but the tele is my personal favorite. this thing rocks alls styles, classic rock, worship, metal, country. for the most part i play a greenday meets social distortion meets lincoln brewster kinda thing (yeah, "good luck" - i've heard that before, but this is what i like ...) buy this amp ... but beware, it's not for the faint of heart ....Read full review
After being out of music and away from playing the guitar for a long, long time, I'm back with a passion. Along the way, I'm upgrading my equipment to end up with just what I want. I sold my vintage 1965, one owner, Princeton Reverb amp for a lot of money and then bought a Fender Frontman 212R. A good moderately priced amp for the money but left some to be desired. I had full intentions to buy a new Fender Deluxe Reverb Reissue or Twin Reverb Reissue but was rather shocked when I played through them. I quickly realized they are not what the Fender amps of the 60's were. So what are the quality of those amps of the 60's? I found what I was looking for with the Mesa Boogie Express 5:50. The only limitation I will have with this amp is due to whatever limitation my guitar skills are. I plan this amp to be a keeper for life. I can't imagine needing anything more... or better. To me it is what the Fender amps of the 60's were. Maybe even better...probably better. Until you have the right amp..it kind of doesn't matter how good the guitar is. Totally satisfied with this product. Morgan Gaffney PS: I don't want to be down on Fender as I have a great respect for the company. I do have a Fender Acoustasonic Junior amp I play my Guild F47MC acoustic guitar through as well as my Shure microphone. I'm mostly satisfied with it based on price versus performance.Read full review
