The lens is modified to remove a filter blocking out IR wavelengths. This causes the lens, if used afterwards by itself, to be slightly off, pinkish it seems to me. But when you mount one of many possible IR filters, you can take different levels of IR photographs while letting the camera handle all the focus and exposure. This by itself would be a compelling reason to purchase a Ricoh GXR (which is nothing short of amazing even without the IR because you would have one IR module and whatever other normal lenses you otherwise have for the camera). I had a simple question about the setup which was answered promptly and courteously by the seller. He patiently explained that his modification would allow me to shoot at normal exposures instead of the extremely high ISO that would be necessary without the modification. In just a short time, I have had many amazing IR photos and have no idea what I am doing. This is good stuff.Read full review

Don't hesitate to try this if you are interested in IR. This is a very good and very economical way to get into infrared photography if you have a GXR body. The conversion is well done. The resulting lens module fits pretty well in a pants pocket even with the filter holder (a tube) mounted, although you could unfasten that and carry the two pieces separately in pockets. In any case, you can always have an IR option available while out shooting with your GXR. I strongly recommend getting the whole set of 4 infrared filters. They're a good deal, and it is hard for most of us to know, in advance, which one you would want to use most often.
Ricoh did something no other camera makers dare do. They created a new and unique camera system that allows you to upgrade your system without buying a new camera. It was a great idea. Not only can you use Ricoh lens but other lens including Lecia. Too bad they did not continue to support this system. Get one now before they are no longer available. They will surely be a collectible classic and price will not dive like Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Sony and so on. It will always retain it's price like a Leica.

Been having a blast taking infrared pictures. Just click and snap, before I had to sit and wait 60 seconds just for a good image on my dimage z1 and the infrared filter. This modified RICOH lens now curbs the pain and boosts mute up to the 10 mp range, which is good enough.

Ir conversion is seemingly what this camera was meant for. Being able to swap out the sensor for a regular one means that the camera retains all normal functionality without needed external filters and stuff. Great buy, great price!
