It's the best lens in this focal range I have used. In term of 50mm prime lens, I owned 2 Canon, 3 other Zeiss. This Otus is the simply the best (next one is Zeiss 50mm Milvus F1.4). The color, the sharpness and the build is top notch. It's heavy, expensive and manual focus only. But the image quality is astonishing.

Zeiss engineers were given a special mandate with the Otus line: Forget marketing, foolish trends, and cost, just create the very finest lenses you can...period. After a year of process, they introduced the Otus line. What is special about the Otus? Well, for one thing...at 1.4 aperture the frame is sharp from corner to corner even with a gorgeous, creamy bokeh. In ten years the Otus 55mm will still be one of the best lenses in its' category because very great glass and precise engineering always will create a stellar image.

Hate the Zeiss Otus goofy size and manual focus (but you can use a Sony with techart adapter to autofocus manual EF/Nikon to Leica M … but now even larger size!) but I own just about every higher end lens ever made from Leica (noctilux to summilux) to Canon L to G master to Sigma Art and the Zeiss Otus has a clarity, transparency, and micro detail that so far seems unmatched. Also, Adorama is one of the very best photo shops in the hobby - fair, honest, and dependable. I may not take the Otus lens out often (due to size), but if I need the highest image quality then Zeiss Otus is the best.
