Having owned or used four Canon wide angle lenses, I was very disappointed with all of them on a 5D full frame body. 20-35 L lens was the worst, 17-40mm and 20mm F/2.8 were poor, and my 28mm f/2.8 must have been a bad sample. You had to stop down to f/16 or f/22 to get the corners in, but diffraction then ruined the overall picture. I read the reviews of the Zeiss 18mm f/3.5 and their 21mm f/2.8, and when the 18mm showed up on eBay for $999 I took the plunge. I could not be happier with the Zeiss super-wide lens. Electronically everything works, including EXIF data. The only down side is the lens is manual focus. With this lens I generally zone focus, thought the beep and green "in focus" dot work on my three Canon bodies. There is some hysteresis, so the focus aid isn't perfect. As a side benefit, on my 40D or 60D bodies, I get a nice 28mm equivalent lens for general purpose usage. There is a lot of vignetting with the lens wide open on full frame, so I usually shoot it at f/8. The mechanical quality of the lens is phenomenal, and the bayonet-mount lens hood is solid. The Zeiss 21mm is likely even better optically, but is much larger, less wide and even more expensive. I am still learning how to use an 18mm effectively, but this lens is a keeper.Read full review
Like all Zeiss lenses, their 18mm f/3.5 Distagon T lens is a long term investment. I like it a lot, especially as used on my BMPCC 6k body. Housed as a ZE, ZF, cp.2, cp.3 or in other guises, it's always a very useable lens — with "that" world-class look the Zeiss glass creates. The fact that it "only" opens up to f/3.5 has not been a problem for me. Most modern cameras have such great low light capability that shooting in low light is simply not as big a problem as in years past. Plus, being a wide angle lens, the bokeh that we covet in other lens, such as a 50mm f/1.4 wide open, is not usually the prime factor when reaching for an 18mm lens.
