I first played the Growl arcade game while at a casino in vegas. Since my oldest brother and I weren't old enough to gamble we spent most of our time chucking quarters into arcade games while the parents tried their luck. Being the early 90s, arcade games had more variety than 500 versions of Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat. Growl was just one of those mindless sidescrolling beat'em ups that I fondly remember arcades for. When the Genesis port came out, I was eager to see how well it would be. Let's just say I wasn't blown away. The graphics are bland and lack detail, especially the character sprites. The backgrounds are a bit better detailed, but not by much. The music is not really that bad and, for what I can remember, is close to the arcades, though the quality is not as crisp. The explosions and other sounds effects are adequately portrayed. Gameplay is as about as good as the graphics. Fighting without a weapon makes the game almost impossible since there are numerous enemies flooding the screen. Good thing weapons aren't in short supply. With a bit of percerverence, completing the game isn't a gargantuan task. It took me about 45 minutes to get through it...MY FIRST TIME THROUGH! Don't expect much in the way of depth. I understand the technical limitations on the Genesis prevent it from having perfect arcade ports, but I know the Genesis hardware is much more capable than what Growl showed. But as I learned during my many years of game playing, arcade ports and licensed games are hit and miss group.Read full review
This is one of the best games on the sega genesis it's also one of the rarest. It is worth every penny you pay for it. It is a beat em up with tons of weapons tons of enemies and animals that you save help you too. If you like beat em ups or a collector that wants something rare get this game and if you can get it for $40 or less buy it because most of the ones in eBay are more. Again this game is super rare and it's one of the best Sega geniesis games ever

I can still remember the first time I played Growl on the Genesis. The game starts with a literal bang and withing moments you're dismembering enemies with explosions from grenades and rocket launchers. As appalling as this may seem to some, as a 9-year-old, I thought it was awesome back in the day. Looking back, I can now more clearly see some of the downsides of this game. The graphics aren't great and the difficulty is quite unforgiving. I still enjoy being able to team up with some of the animals and seeing them turn on their handlers when you release them. From what I understand, like many ports in the 80s and 90s, Growl doesn't quite measure up to its arcade counterpart – which is typical, but nevertheless bears mentioning. From a collector's standpoint, this is a game worthy of consideration. It's not entirely uncommon which is the case with other Taito tiles for the Genesis (i.e. Space Invaders 91'.) All in all, Growl is an interesting and worthy addition to any gamer's collection.Read full review
