I absolutely love proffesor Layton games and was so happy to receive this in the mail. Within two days I had it completed and it was so much fun. The puzzles are great and its a whole lot of fun(even if it doesn't have all the fancy aspects of the newer Layton games). Would recommend.

Excellent game to spend a few minutes a day on. Puzzles were challenging enough to make me think but not simple enough to just blow through. I enjoyed it enough to buy the next in the series!

Searching for puzzle/brain games for grandma. She likes it lots. It is older but still functions. She has had to set it aside a few times as she had gotten stuck on a puzzle and needed a break.

The Professor Layton series is often seen as a franchise most enjoyable for kids in the U.S., while most of Japan believes Layton to basically be the next Sherlock Holmes. The first entry in the series seemed to have been aimed mostly at kids, however. The story is not as complex as in the later entries, but there are many key moments in this title that later games often use as reference, so anybody looking to get into the series should definitely start with this one. You should still be able to enjoy the story as you will meet many interesting characters and actually be surprised by the many twists that this game is in stock for you. Let's get to the meat of the game; the puzzles. I remember that I had a lot of trouble solving all of the puzzles in the game. If you just want to play through the story though, you are only forced to solve around 60 puzzles and they are relatively easy compared to the optional and unlockable ones. You should get through the story in 6-8 hours depending on your strengths since the puzzles do offer a lot of variety. Finishing all of the 150 puzzles is quite a challenge and you should get a lot of enjoyment out of it (as well as a special code that you can input in the next game for more puzzles). If you are new to the Layton series (and you most likely are since this is the first game) you will be amazed by the art style (at least... I was) and the characters that you encounter, as well as by the weird architecture of some of the buildings. All of the games are connected, like I said, so if you enjoy this entry you will really love the next ones (since it only gets better from there) This is not the best entry in the Layton series, but nonetheless very enjoyable. There are no flaws to speak of and the soundtrack and overall atmosphere are great. While the cover is misleading as it hints towards a more childish story, it is quite complex and interesting. While most of the younger players might be able to finish the game, I doubt that they will be able to solve all of the puzzles... Which doesn't mean that they shouldn't attempt it!Read full review
