I remember playing the arcade version of Final Fight, when I was a kid. Although, ironically, it was never featured at the local arcade, but rather at a now-defunct water park and similarly-defunct pre-stadium theater. So, naturally, I was extremely excited when it came out for the Super Nintendo; and I played the hell out of it. However, I could only glare with envy at those fortunate enough to have parents who could afford the then $299.99 Sega CD prerequisite to play Final Fight CD. I had a cousin with a Sega CD, so I picked this game, when Toys R Us clearanced it. That Sega CD no longer works, so I have not be able to play this version of the game for some time. However, I still recall it to be the best console version of the game and perhaps even superior to the arcade original. Like its arcade counterpart, this game features three playable characters, six levels, and co-op game play. Its graphics are nearly identical, it has a more balanced difficulty setting, and best of all: A time-attack mode, in which you have 60 seconds to slay as many enemies as possible, before either the timer or your life bar runs out. You can choose between former-wrestler-turned-mayor: Mike Haggar (and yes, he is the inspiration for Jesse Ventura),the ninja guy: Guy, or Haggar's kidnapped daughter's jack-of-all-trades boyfriend: Cody. My favorite was the slow, but brutish Haggar. The move-set was limited, but pile-driving, head-butting, body-slamming, and bludgeoning enemies never seemed repetitive. Nowadays, they just don't make games like Final Fight the same way they made games like Final Fight. The reason is obvious. Final Fight was a simple game, made during a simpler time for gaming. No one today would be willing shell $59.99 for a game like Final Fight, which you can beat within a couple hours of purchasing; but back in the early 90's, they made games to be short, sweet, and near-infinitely replayable.Read full review
I love this game. I'm telling you when I picked up a Sega CD recently, this was the first game I had to get..again. This is the closest direct arcade port version you're going to find of this game. All the levels are there, all the characters, and the music is awesome. The only other version I would own of this is the Game boy Advanced Final Fight alpha advanced. Its the next best thing. You get to choose from three characters and then you go and beat the living crap out of everybody! Its awesome!!!:D The only downside is the colors on the graphics aren't that vivid but its the genesis 63. What do you expect. I've played this on Capcom's greates hits for PS2. Not as good. I've played it on Final Fight Streetwise for PS2...not as good. The Sega CD IS the best version. Buy it, love it, play it again and again. It never gets old.Read full review
If you didn't already know, Final Fight was released between Street Figther I (a game few people probably played) and Street Fighter II (perhaps the most modded & rehashed OFFICIAL game ever released in the history of console & arcade gaming). Why? Because at the time side-scrolling "beat-em-ups" had been popluair for years since the release of such games as "Double Dragon" and "Golden Axe." SF I might not have been as well-received as Capcom had hoped, so out came this classic franchise. Oddly enough even though the game features Guy (the third playable char from the original arcade game who wasn't accessible from the original Super Nintendo port of the game), for some reason the names of many of the enemy chars still are censored. The first boss isn't named "Damnd." And the katana wielding boss isn't "Sodom." Plus, having been released on Sega CD, the game suffers from a slightly deficent color palatte owing to core system (Sega Genesis) only being able to produce 63 colors. Although a good bonus is that the beginning cinema sequence is much better animated whereas in previous versions they were a series of still pictures. If you've played only the SNES version, bear in mind that one of the female punks from the arcade game was changed into a skinny male punk for that version. I guess Nintendo didn't think having even one female char beatup was a no-no. There's also an extra level with the a boss char named "Rolento" to contend with. A nice addittion to the game which I'm not sure had been featured elsewhere is a time attack or survival mode where you plunked into a special stage and must beat the living crud out of as many punks as you can possibly can before your life bar runs out. I'm sure you won't find this in the compilation pack recently released for PS2 (Capcom Classics Collection volume 1). Final Fight CD is a rare game to find. You should check it out if you're curious what kinda games came out in the days when the CD-ROM format (popularized by PSOne and replaced by DVD on PS2) was still considered new. Otherwise if you just want to have a straight port of the arcade, then hit up the game Capcom Classics Collection volume 1 I mentioned earlier.Read full review
With the SNES version only getting 2 characters to choose from, Final Fight CD really beats that version with the inclusion of Guy. Although SNES did have a stand alone Final Fight Guy game, the Sega CD version trumps the SNES version with Stereo CD audio. Now all I can say as far as this game goes is if you are a fan of Final Fight Arcade like me, and if you are a Fan of Sega CD, this is one game that should not go left out of your collection of Sega CD stuff. After that being said, let me tell you, this game is hard!!! I'm going to try a jack move on it tonight though. I am going to up all the continues, up all the lives, then I am going to boast the Free Man per points deal, play as long as I can on that, then when I have one life left, boom press start on player two and see if that will give me a new roll of lives. I doubt it will though. See ya.Read full review
