There's some chatter and reviews out there bashing the Black Sigil: Blade of the Exile DS game. Black Sigil is a fantastic game, and it rates right up there with other fun RPGs games. Initially some players immediately criticizing the game because they felt the encounter rate was too high. This was the main complaint. Others stated the game would sometimes freeze. Yet other complained that it was a poor attempt at copying some other game. Players who wanted a lower encounter rate have probably never played the DS FF series (especially FFIV) because the encounter rate is about the same. The initial encounter rate lets one build-up their HP and MP which is very important in RPGs. As the game quickly advances, the encounter rate is greatly reduced or the enemies are quickly removed. For the hours and hours that I spent playing this game on a DSi, I only experienced one freeze. Players experiencing a freeze, which were few, were able to fix the problem by simply increasing the text speed. However, just in case, some saved the game in a couple of slots. Some players immediately began comparing Black Sigil to other popular games, like Chrono Trigger. If the game play wasn't exactly the same, players began to bash it. True Chrono Trigger is really a fun game, but so is Black Sigil. They're just different. For example, Chrono Trigger provides several different areas (towns, caves, etc.) which players continue to revisit. Black Sigil's areas are unique, a one shot deal. In caves/dungeons, Chrono Trigger has a great mapping feature similar to the FF games. This makes the game easier to play. In passing through caves/dungeons in Black Sigil, one must remember where they've been; meaning there's more challenge. Fire Emblem, Radiant Dawn, is a Wii RPG game, totally different than Zelda, Twilight Princess. When I first played Fire Emblem I thought, "What a waste of money." I sat the game aside and a few weeks later attempted to play it again. That game is so much fun. It's like playing chess. Each character has different skills. You move your characters first, and then the computer will then move its characters. Where am I going with this? If all games were the same, then why not just keep playing your initial game over and over. There's lots of Black Sigil rating in the 7, 8 and high 9's. The lower harsh reviews that the game received are unjustified. IMO it's obvious that some individuals writing reviews never played the game more than a few hours, or simply wrote their reviews based on other bad reviews. As one can tell, I'm a great defended of Black Sigil. If you really like playing RPGs, then buy the game and enjoy!Read full review
The Nintendo DS has become an unexpected home for great role playing games. The processing power of the diminutive handheld is ideal for recreating classic games from the Super Nintendo era which gave us titles like Breath of Fire and the Final Fantasy games. Developer Studio Archcraft attempts to capture the nostalgia of the old classics while creating a new, original title hoping to become a household name.
