A continuation of EA's well known Hockey series. This pretty much plays like the Genesis/Megadrive version of the game, but there are a few differences. In this version you get a FMV-intro, a different soundtrack (real instruments), improved sound effects and audio commenting before matches. Compared to its predecessor, NLPHA Hockey' 93, The controls are more responsive, and you also get to see team logos. Others new features are penalty shots and the introduction of the one-timer. Also, the overall rating of individual players is more sensible (no more players with a 0-20 overall rating). NHL' 94 is an improvement from NHLPA Hockey' 93, However, the fighting and blood is removed, which was an unfortunate decision. In my teens, I spent a tremendous amount of time on the early EA Hockey games. Actually, I am a hockey fan only because I played these games as a teenager. NHL' 94 was among my favorites. I imagine it can be difficult to appreciate these games today if you do not have some nostalgic connection to them. But, if you liked these games while growing up, you will probably still enjoy this title. As you might remember, the SEGA/MEGA CD was a very costly device back in the day. Now, finally, you can play the CD version for a very reasonable price. I highly recommend this title. For many, this is the best sports game ever. I am not sure if I could wholeheartedly agree with that, but still, an excellent game. My score: 9/10Read full review
When NHL 94 came out back in 1993 it was one of, if not THE best sports games. This was the first game to have all the NHL teams and NHL Players. Penalty shots, expansion teams, manual and most importantly; one-timers we all in NHL 94. At the time the graphics, animations, local organ music, gameplay and speed were all top-notch. The Sega CD version had CD quality sound and improved graphics. It also had tons of video clips that were impossible on a 8-16 meg cartridge. MHL 94 was the most realistic console hockey game, yet it appealed to people who could care less about playing or watch real-life hockey. Who can not love flying down on the goalie with Roenick doing a backhand-to-forehand topshelf deke, or cutting across and having Ray Bourque unleash a slapshot, or Jagr feeding Mario a one-timer? There's a reason it's been voted "All-Time Greatest Sports Video Game" and people are still playing it well over a decade late; the game is simply fun and intense.Read full review
Physics engine is amazing. Players really feel like they have "weight". One of the best sports games ever made and is even up there in the best video game ever made list. The Sega CD version is the definitive experience too. Highly recommended.

If you already have nba jam for gen or super, this one is not worth picking up unless it's a good price. The sega cd version adds better music, one choppy video clip at half time and slightly updated roster. The game plays the same way as thier other 16 bit counter parts.

Happy to have this game in my collection!!! Only gave it a 4 star because both hinges were broken on the case. Not just one. Other than that, love it!!
