This game was more like Star Trek then the Star Trek games out at the time, it was essentially a large space sandbox with over 100 star systems to explore, each of these systems was fully realized with land-able planets (some with ruins, life forms to capture, weather systems, tectonic activity, etc.) and other various phenomenon either in the systems or in open space. Basically, all the stuff that happens in a Typical Star Trek episode can happen here. There is a main story, but their are side quests as well. You can complete the main story at your own pace. You are given a basic ship that you can upgrade by mining and then selling your haul. You hire a small crew, there are humans and aliens that have differing strengths and weaknesses you can recruit. You can train their skills up so even if a crew member isn't naturally skilled at something, if your willing to spend the cash you can train them to be good at it. Certain areas of the galaxy are other alien races territory (think the Klingons and Romulans), depending on the race you can adjust how you deal with them, you can actually talk an aggressive race out of a fight or say the wrong thing and tick off an ally. If you come across this game I recommened finding a complete version, as the manual is the size of a small paperback novel and has tons of lore and backstory which really add to the game and flesh out the universe, there is also a map that while not required, it greatly adds to the game as well. I only beat the game once back in the early 90s when I got it. I'm looking foward to doing so again. 11/10 would get slaughtered by Giant Mantids again.Read full review

Starflight was way ahead of it's time when it came out, and even by today's standards it is an excellent game. Only the graphics really date it. For a 16 bit cartridge game it is unbelievable. The number of star systems to enter and explore is mind boggling, and each has it's own planetary system. You can land on most planets and explore them, some even having ruins and ancient artifacts to find or alien life forms to capture. Your ship is upgradeable via engines, weapons, even hull and storage space. The various intelligent aliens you encounter in space each have their own personality and require a different approach to get along with. I sincerely feel that Starflight stands up to the test of time and is well worth playing, even over more visually stunning games made today.
Great story, graphics, and gameplay for a SERIOUS older gamer. Compelling and fun, but you NEED the map.

I bought this game when it first came out, it looked like it would be a challenge and it was. It was fun the first time around and it's just as fun now. You get action and adventure with this game, you make a wrong move and you're toast. The stotyline is what got me hooked, then the challange. You must remember this is not just an easy game you have to make the right choices and stay alive. I rate this game 5 out of 5 and yes it is excellent for its time.
