Star Ocean: First Departure is a remake of the original Star Ocean. First released on the Super Famicom in 1996, this version marks the first time the game is available in North America. Star Ocean: First Departure had a release date of 2008 on the Sony PSP platform. In Star Ocean: First Departure, a group of friends is searching the cosmos to find a cure for a new disease that has ravaged their planet. When they come into contact with two warring factions, they are sucked into the middle of their fight. To find a cure for the disease, these friends must first put a stop to this conflict. The game was developed by Tri-Ace and published by Square Enix.You will have to battle if you want to make progress in the story. In Star Ocean: First Departure, you will take control of one character while the computer handles the other three. Your character has a basic attack combo that you can modify by using two special moves during battle. Chaining together basic attacks and special moves is your ticket to big damage. You can also use spells and items during battle. These spells and items can heal your damage or make you impervious to attacks. Many of the combat systems in this game were overhauled from the original release for the Super Nintendo. Armor and weapons will make all the difference during battle. A set of new armor can mean the difference between barely surviving a fight and coming out without a scratch. However, if you can't afford a new piece of armor, you can always craft it. Each character has his or her own set of crafting abilities. These abilities let them make items ranging from weapons and armor to a plate of delicious food. Characters will often need to combine their skills to create items of the highest quality. The crafting skills you learn in this PSP game aren't just limited to this mode. You can use these skills during battle to power up your character, such as giving him more armor. Star Ocean: First Departure differs from most PSP RPG games in that it isn't linear. Instead, every choice you make propels you towards a different ending. The choices you make will also influence the members who join your party and even who you meet. No two games of this PlayStation RPG play out the same. Interspersed in the game are anime cut scenes produced by the esteemed Production I.G. company. All major plot points in the game are also voiced by professional actors. Famous voice actors, such as Yuri Lowenthal, lend their talents to this PlayStation title. This title has a rating of T for Teen due to its animated violence. Fans of the Star Ocean series finally get to play the game that started the series with this PSP title. This title features the same excellent story as the SNES game from Japan but with upgraded visuals and gameplay mechanics.

Great Goddamn Game
This is a upgraded version of Star Ocean on the Super Famicom that Nintendo and Enix thought wouldn't work here in the west in 1996, but they were wrong. Fast forward to 2008 and you get this lovely gem for your PSP. It's essentially Star Ocean: The Second Story's game engine from the PS1 with the First Departure's story line plugged in. Do yourself a favor and don't miss this excellent JRPG.

It's a start
Star Ocean First departure for the PlayStation Portable is one of the best games on the handheld the Second Story second evolution even better the item Creation in first departure isn't as good as the Second Story evolution it's still workable and the replayability to find new characters works as well

A MUST to play, at least once, for Star Ocean fan
I've first played the star ocean 2 for the psx. I finally got this game and got to play it. It was really interesting to play this game. And in the pros and cons section below: Yes, I'm aware that this was originally a SNES game. Opens up some things for Star ocean 2 and 4 players. Cons: Very short game Bonus dungeon was a bit of a letdown Not many different endings Not many free slots for new chars to join (I was forced to have 6 char slots used, leaving only 2 slots open in the end) After some voluntary events, one character leaves Rather high enc rate Character art Only ONE character is able to call for bunny, if you don't have this character, better luck next time No your own transportation vehicles such as an airship Pros: Very much like the Star Ocean 2 for the psx The story BEFORE events of Star Ocean 2 is unraveled here Movie gallery Voice gallery Great humor, got me cracked up SO many times Upgraded graphics, game looks great Great soundtrack New character StoryRead full review

Good, but could use some clarity
Generally, the game is pretty fun to play through. It lacks some clarity as to the story line--where to go, what to do. I take my games kinda relaxed and tend to exhaust them on the first run through (take 80 hours to play a 30 hour game), but I got lost a couple of times and had to resort to the internet for help. There is a lot of backtracking. That would be my biggest problem with it. However, the soundtrack is fun and not completely monotonous. The anime vignettes are fun, and the story is clear and moves along pretty well. Overall it is a lot better than other RPG's that I have bought for the PSP. Worth buying.
