Are you are craving a good space shooter for your beloved 3DO! Burning Soldier is the only one that I could ever find, so I bought a copy off of e-Bay and awaited anxiously for it's arrival..My initial reaction was "You've got to be kidding!" Like a futuristic Panzer Dragoon, space objects were flying at me left and right, continuously pelting into me as I pathetically tried to keep up with my single shot shooter! Terrible graphics!...My initial 3 lives were very soon gone, and the disc was 10 seconds away from being tossed into the garbage!!...Until the greatest word in shooter history appeared on the final menu..CONTINUE..!! Maybe this game isn't so bad after all..Starting up again, I came to realize that the B Button was also in use, but to use it, you had to find a "break" in the action long enough to hold it down and let it charge up a bomb that could then lock on and annihilate nearly everything on the screen! Let off before you've fully charged it and you get nothing! nada! So this creates situations where you have to say- OK- Looks like I'm going to forced to get whacked by these 3 missiles coming at me, in order to clear out these other 8 targets in the distance!...So..you take a lot of unneccesary hits! All of these are usually things that I hate about shooters, but for some reason I was giving this game chance after chance!..Maybe it was the futuristic backdrops with the "stunning" cutscenes between! (yawn!) Or maybe it was the goofy behavior of the enemies that posed a challenge of which I couldn't resist?! In the game, you are playing an "on the rails" shooter- the computer flies you along a set path- you just duck and weave and shoot frantically in defense most of the time. Being the hardcore shooter pilot that I am, I switched the game to "easy" difficulty and jumped back in!!...Hmmm..that makes things more manageable, and, if you play it right, you can actually (almost) keep up with these constant waves of enemies in your face!.... and that in order to do so, you have to be very intense, in which case the game itself becomes very intense, and before you know it, you are playing an INTENSE shooter! Of which you are hopelessly hooked- hey- wait a minute! Isn't that all one can ask of a shooter? Intensity and fun!! I had found it! My beloved 3DO now had a shooter to match no other!! Silpheed fans can rejoice!! Continuing on into the game, you will discover that each level consists of 4 or 5 stages before a final boss type level. (WAY too easy, by the way, but who cares) After the boss, the program allows you to restart an infinite number of times from that point. OK- I loved the game, but there was still one fly in the ointment. I couldn't help but think "If I only had TURBO-FIRE!" If ever a game needed an auto fire setting, this would be it! So, once I bought a turbo controller off of e-Bay and plugged it in, the game performed like a whole new animal= Finally I was able to keep up, blast beyond the levels I had been stuck on- and loved the game even more! In a display of the stupidest programming that you will ever find, the game has no powerups at all! In order to recharge your shield, you are expected to STOP SHOOTING!?!A definite NO-NO for a Shooter!?! But the game is so intensely great that I soon realized that this added another strategic element to the game! There is also a 2-Player mode that I didn't get to try. In the end, I absolutely loved Burning Soldier, and it is now one of my favorite shooters of all-time!Read full review
Burning Soldier was released for the 3DO in 1994 and was a pack in game for some 3DO consoles at the time. This game is a typical on-rails shooter, meaning you have no control of any movements. Just a boring interactive movie/tech demo of pressing buttons rapidly to shoot targets with a cursor. It gets 1 1/2 stars because it's better than other 3DO on-rails shooters Star Blade and much better than Sewer Shark!
This I anly bought for my collection the artwork on the package looks good but what you have inside it a lump of coal. 3DO showed they didn't have what it takes to compete to high priced not puting there all in there games and wasting money on promotions. that lead to there downfall and demise. forever they will burn for there mistakes. then look at playstation it comes out of nowwhere and gives game players what they want.
