Attack of The Mutant Penguins is a title name that can't help but catch the eye. Having learnt about this game from certain online sources I had to try it out myself and was not disappointed. The game offers a reasonable challenge on the harder difficulties setting but is easierly mastered on the lower settings offering you the chance to just play the game for fun (rather than for challenge) One major issuse that I had with the game was the lack of stage music. Each level has a variety of themes but no music however and I feel that this is the games biggest down fall, making it feel monotonous. The aim of the game is simple, have creatures called Gremlins open chests for you in order to collect letters that spell out either pan or bat (your weapon/s). Once done you have to hit the evil or even good pengiuns to have them drop orbs that allow you to power up you weapon to the point where you can kill the enemy penguins before they step on what is known as the Doomscale. The levels offer a varying difficulty to how you may go about this but it is essentially rinse and repeat and going back to my earlier point of there being no music in each stage, it can feel more monotonous than if it did have music for each stage. Between each stage you taken to a mini game, there are 3 different mini games in total, which are chosen at random. This offers a great change of pace to the game and offer enough distraction to keep you amused and enough of a break between levels to keep you wanting to play on. (At least it did for myself anyway) The main reason I have given this game a 4/5 is purely down to the lack of level music. Had the developers put in just a little more time to include some interesting stage music then this game would of really stood out. All that considered, Attack of The Mutant Penguins is one of the better titles to add to your Atari Jaguar collection.Read full review
I am super happy I purchased this game. Some people will say it is slow paced or does not provide action. I love the tower defense action. The trick is to maintain your power ups or you will not succeed. The themes of the levels are varied and seeing evil penguins dressed as Elvis or cowboys is charming. Overall a very fun game. Only gripe is there are only 20 levels. But hey, it was made in the 90s.
