Frogger, the arcade classic from 1984, gets a sequel for the Atari 5200 with Frogger II: Threeedeep!. In this game you must hop a frog safely into the required number of home berths in each level in the required amount of time. Each of the nine levels of play contains three screens: Underwater Frogger, Surface Frogger and Airborne Frogger.
Underwater Frogger has you hopping our green friend into log berths that float horizontally at the top of the screen. While hopping about, you must avoid deadly alligators and snapping barracudas that swim across the playfield. You must also be careful not to float off the screen. Little fish can't hurt you, but they will impede your progress. In all but the first level of play, you must watch out for Larry the Eel, who appears from the ocean floor.
For bonus points, you can catch bubbles that float up from the bottom of the screen. Joe the diving turtle is a frog-loving sort who will give you rides upon his back. When he's with Joe, Frogger is invulnerable. To reach the next screen, which will take you above the surface, you can jump into a log berth that is already filled or jump onto the ends or wooden underside of any log.
Frogger can't swim too well in Surface Frogger, so he must hop on creatures or objects to make his way to the tugboat life preserver berths. Logs, lily pads, alligators and whales make for safe passage. In higher levels, deadly sharks skim the lily pads. You can hop on hippos, but be careful if they begin to shake, and if you hitch a ride on a baby duck, beware the wrath of Mama Duck. If you want to get airborne in order to reach the next screen, you must jump onto Mama Duck.
In Airborne Frogger, you must bounce on a large cloud in order to hop onto a bird. Then you must hop from row to row until Frogger is tucked safely inside a cloud berth. As you go, be careful not to run into the airplane or Clyde the flying dragon. You can eat butterflies for extra points, but doing so will open or widen holes in the clouds. For an extra lift, you can ride some of the birds.
After completing two levels and clearing 10,000 points, a stork will appear. Hop onto this bird for a baby frog, which means an extra life.
