Although the Atari VCS version of the game was canceled, Computer Chess was released for Atari's 8-bit computers, and it's a pretty good simulation of the intellectually stimulating board game. There are eight difficulty levels from which to choose (ranging from beginner to expert), interfacing is smooth and easy, and the program includes a number of chess problems to solve. The board is green and orange, and the chess pieces are fairly well drawn (if a bit simplistic). The computer makes stupid mistakes in the first couple of levels while the hardest two levels are prohibitively time consuming as the computer takes a long time in making its moves. Overall, Computer Chess is a respectable, though uneven gaming experience.
