Andro Dunos has a storyline that's a bit different than the usual mankind's-only-hope sort of thing going on in most shooters. Humans and aliens have been engaged in a war for a long time, but, because of the aliens' superior technology, the situation is slowly getting more and more desperate for humans. In a last ditch effort the humans have constructed a series of super-powerful missiles. These missiles were launched at the alien lines with devastating results, sending the alien war machine reeling.
At this point the humans realized that a well-executed tactical strike into the heart of the alien territory would end the war for good. During this time a pair of highly secret space fighters based on captured alien technology were completed, and it was decided that these two fighters would execute the tactical strike. If the pilots succeed humankind would be safe from the alien threat.
Andro Dunos is a pretty standard side scrolling shooter with a somewhat unique power-up system. At the beginning of the game players have a selection of four weapons to use. These weapons are designated blue, orange, yellow, and green, and players can switch between them at any point in the game. Each weapon can be powered up a number of levels into more powerful weapons by picking up power-up icons while the weapon is currently selected. Once the weapon is powered up, players can hold down the shoot button to charge up and release a devastating super attack. This drains one weapon level however.
One or two players can simultaneously blast their way through seven stages of scrolling shooter action, contending with the stage enemies and defeating the level bosses. If the fighter is destroyed the player loses one level of the weapon that the fighter had been using. Weapon levels can never drop below zero.
