I bought this game because of a similar title I bought in the 80's for the Commodore 64/128. In this game as well as the one from the 80's you take the role of a pirate captain with the goals of amassing wealth, prestige, finding lost family members and last but not least tracking down the villain resposible for you and your families woes. This game is quite fun to play but you must act quickly or you will become too old and ill to complete it, as your character ages as the game progresses. This game is very challenging at the rogue captain level as you cannot just beat everyone silly in the sword fights, your opponents actually have some skill at this level. To win your bride to be you must become proficient at hitting the correct buttons in time to the music during the ballroom dance sequences. The ship to ship combat is pretty basic, get in a couple of good broadsides with the right ammo and the ship is yours. Henry Morgan's "Queen Ann's Revenge" is about the best warship you can capture and not upgrade, its a large frigate class. Only real tic I had with this game was the amount of time that burns up when you have to sail against the wind, because in this game time is your biggest enemy. it affects your crew morale, your health and speed in a swordfight, and your ability to catch the evil Count who holds the info to find your family. Overall, this is a good game and will keep you entertained for days.Read full review
This game for the xbox platform is a MUST HAVE for anyone interested in mixing a little board-game strategy into their video gameplay. Not solely a third-person shooter experience, "Sid Meier's Pirates!" lets the gamer build a dynamic career that is directly affected by the choices he/she makes within the game. The controls are easy to master and maneuver, but the difficulty comes with integrating tactics and aforementioned strategy into the swordfights, ship battles and land campaigns that serve as the action portions of the game. Whether you decide to play it straight and amass a fortune as a prosperous merchant, or want to go the mercenary route as a sailor-for-hire employed by the English, Dutch, French or Spanish, or even do the dirty work to maraud, pillage and plunder your way to vast wealth and power on the high seas as a renegade pirate without a nation, the game leaves it all up to you. The graphics are acceptable when playing on an xbox 360 and have a slightly cartoonish style to them that prevents the game from ever becoming too heavy or dark. If you remember the computer game from the late 80's, there's no way you can pass on this classic that still stands strong nearly 20+ years after its inception.Read full review
This is one of the greatest Real Time games I have had the joy of playing, you start out as a young boy whose family is taken into slavery by the evil Marquis, but you run away and become a pirate. you rescue family members, defeat pirates, find there treasure, find lost cities, fall in love, and sack entire towns! with great graphics, great sea battles and bording action, along with a fun multiplayer mode, I recomend you join the Pirates today Matey!
This is a game I liked to play on the computer a long time ago. It is very much like a game for the PC, called HighSeas trader 2000. I used to play it about 15 years ago. I don`t know if Sid Meier`s made that version or not.Pirates is a little repetative in the danceing mode, and the fighting on the ships, sword style battles, are to easy, and are the same graphics over and over. I love the trading options with other ports. Survival is the key idea. It`s sad that you can find the pirates on the top 10 list in about the first 2 hours of the game.I was expecting it to be much better in the area of ,different on ship battles.I only have a choice of 5 ratings,I would only give it an average . I only played it for about 5 hours total and have not played it any more.
Have you dreamed of being a pirate? Do you wish you wore a patch over one eye and carried a parrot on your shoulder? Do you have nightmares of having your ship sunk in the middle of the Caribbean? Well then this game is for you. It has everything you need to be the pirate you ever wanted PLUS it has the BEST AI engine written by Sid Meier. If you are a fan of his other work (Civilization etc.) then you will love this game too. You get to fight with a sword. Use your fleet of ships to take over the Caribbean and fire your cannons. Choose your side and decide what factions you want to help and which ones you want to plunder. (Yes this game is open ended) Conduct trade to make extra coin. You also get to do battle with some the the greatest pirates of all time. All while you are trying to find your long lost family that where kidnapped when you were a child. I really enjoy this game a lot. Lots of different challenges rolled into one game. The graphics are GREAT! The sound is wonderful. (Although some voice acting would have been a nice touch) The action is unlimited. The difficulty levels are wonderful and allow you to set the game up to be as challenging as you need it. AND the replay value on this game is unlimited. Try to become the most fears pirate on the Caribbean Sea!!!Read full review
